India and Mauritius have strengthened their energy partnership with the signing of a new government-to-government memorandum of understanding on cooperation in the oil and gas sector, alongside a long-term petroleum supply agreement between Indian Oil Corporation and Mauritius’ State Trading Corporation.
The agreements are intended to provide Mauritius with greater security and predictability in fuel supplies while expanding India’s role as a reliable energy partner in the Indian Ocean region. Under the long-term arrangement, Indian Oil Corporation will support the supply of key petroleum products required by Mauritius, including fuels used in transport and aviation.
The cooperation goes beyond commercial fuel sales. Both countries are looking to deepen engagement in areas such as petroleum logistics, storage, refining linkages and long-term energy planning. The arrangement can also help Mauritius reduce exposure to disruptions in global energy markets by strengthening access to supplies from India’s large refining and distribution network.
For India, the agreement expands the overseas role of its public-sector energy companies and reinforces economic ties with a strategically important Indian Ocean partner. Mauritius has long maintained close political, cultural and commercial relations with India, and energy cooperation is increasingly becoming another important pillar of that relationship.
The two sides are also expected to explore opportunities in cleaner and sustainable fuels, including biofuels and other emerging energy solutions, as Mauritius works to diversify its energy mix and reduce dependence on conventional fossil fuels over the longer term.
The latest agreements therefore mark a shift toward a more structured and long-term energy partnership. By combining assured petroleum supplies with wider cooperation in future fuels and energy infrastructure, India and Mauritius are building a framework that strengthens both Mauritius’ energy security and India’s growing role as a regional energy partner.
