ZSI Publishes Major Faunal Inventory of Visakhapatnam as Urban Biodiversity Comes Into Focus

Visakhapatnam is one of India’s largest coastal cities and combines dense urban settlements with industrial areas, hills, freshwater habitats and the Bay of Bengal coastline.

The Zoological Survey of India has completed a major scientific documentation exercise on the animal diversity of Visakhapatnam, publishing a comprehensive 296-page faunal inventory of the Andhra Pradesh coastal city.

The study, titled Faunal Inventorization of Smart City of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, was published in 2026 by the Director of the Zoological Survey of India.

ZSI officially listed the publication in its March 2026 E-News among its major new scientific books. The work was prepared by Deepa J., S.S. Jadhav, M. Karuthapandi, Sk. Rehanuma, C. Raghunathan and Dhriti Banerjee.

Scientific Baseline for a Rapidly Growing Coastal City

The significance of the study lies in its focus on an urban landscape undergoing rapid transformation.

Documenting the fauna occurring across such a landscape provides scientists and planners with a baseline against which future changes in biodiversity can be assessed.

The Zoological Survey of India is India’s principal national organisation for taxonomic research and faunal documentation. Its mandate includes surveying, exploring and documenting the diversity and distribution of animal life across the country.

Urban biodiversity inventories therefore form an important part of understanding how wildlife persists alongside expanding cities and infrastructure.

ZSI Brings Multiple Taxonomic Specialities Together

The Visakhapatnam publication brings together work by scientists with expertise across different faunal groups.

Among the authors is Dr M. Karuthapandi, a Scientist-D at ZSI’s Freshwater Biology Regional Centre in Hyderabad. ZSI lists his areas of expertise as freshwater branchiopods, ostracods, zooplankton and wetland ecology.

The involvement of scientists from different disciplines allows such inventories to examine far more than the most visible groups such as birds and mammals.

Invertebrates, freshwater organisms and smaller animal groups can provide valuable information about ecosystem health but are frequently overlooked in conventional urban wildlife surveys.

Visakhapatnam Offers an Unusual Biodiversity Landscape

Visakhapatnam’s geography makes it particularly suitable for a detailed faunal study.

The city sits between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal, creating a mosaic of terrestrial, freshwater and coastal habitats within and around a major urban centre.

Its surrounding landscape contains hills, streams, reservoirs, scrubland, wooded areas and marine environments.

At the same time, Visakhapatnam has experienced substantial urbanisation, industrial growth, road construction and expansion of residential areas.

A scientific inventory can therefore help establish which animal groups continue to survive within this changing environment and which habitats may require greater conservation attention.

Urban Faunal Surveys Can Guide Conservation

The importance of urban biodiversity documentation extends beyond producing species lists.

Baseline inventories can help identify ecologically significant habitats, monitor changes in animal populations and guide decisions involving land use, infrastructure and habitat restoration.

They can also reveal animal groups that have been poorly documented previously.

ZSI’s wider publication programme is designed to build precisely this kind of scientific record. The organisation maintains extensive national faunal archives covering ecosystems, states, protected areas and individual taxonomic groups.

The Visakhapatnam study adds an important urban dimension to that work.

The Visakhapatnam volume was one of several major faunal publications issued by ZSI during 2026.

Its March publication list also included studies of the fauna associated with seaweed and seagrass along India’s east coast, a national faunal-survey methodology manual and a major assessment of faunal diversity in Pune district.

Together, these publications reflect ZSI’s continuing effort to build detailed scientific records of India’s animal diversity across both natural and human-modified landscapes.

Visakhapatnam Study Creates a Reference Point for the Future

For Visakhapatnam, the new faunal inventory provides something particularly valuable: a documented reference point at a time when the city and its surrounding landscape are changing rapidly.

Future surveys can use this baseline to examine whether species distributions are expanding, declining or shifting as urban development continues.
