The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has announced that Biometric Aadhaar Authentication (BAA) will become mandatory for domestic LPG consumers seeking subsidised cylinder refills from 1 October 2026.
The move is aimed at strengthening the LPG subsidy delivery mechanism by ensuring that benefits reach genuine beneficiaries, reducing duplicate or inactive connections, and improving transparency in the distribution system.
Consumers who have already completed Aadhaar-based biometric authentication will not need to take any additional steps. Those who have not completed the process will be required to complete authentication to continue receiving subsidised LPG benefits.
The authentication process can be completed through LPG distributors, authorised service points, and digital platforms provided by oil marketing companies. The system will link the consumer’s LPG connection with verified identity details to improve accountability in subsidy delivery.
The initiative builds upon earlier reforms such as the PAHAL (Pratyaksh Hastantarit Labh) scheme, which introduced direct transfer of LPG subsidy into consumers’ bank accounts. The government has stated that Aadhaar-based verification mechanisms help reduce leakages and ensure more efficient targeting of welfare benefits.
The mandatory biometric authentication is part of a broader effort to modernise public service delivery systems through digital identity verification while improving the efficiency of subsidy programmes.
