India’s indigenous defence avionics ecosystem has received a fresh boost with Samtel HAL Display Systems Limited (SHDS) inaugurating a new manufacturing and testing facility at Udyog Vihar, Phase IV, Gurugram, expanding domestic capabilities in advanced aircraft display systems and associated avionics.
The facility was formally inaugurated on 26 August 2026 by Ravi K., Chairman and Managing Director of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), in the presence of Puneet Kaura, Director of SHDS and Managing Director and CEO of Samtel Avionics, along with senior representatives of HAL and the Samtel Group.
Expanding Indigenous Avionics Capability
The new centre has been created with dedicated capabilities for the testing and quality assurance of advanced display systems. It will also support the design, development, manufacturing and product support of display systems intended for both airborne and ground-based applications.
The expansion is significant because modern military aircraft increasingly depend on sophisticated cockpit avionics that consolidate navigation, flight, sensor, mission and weapons information into multifunction displays. Building these systems domestically reduces dependence on imported equipment while strengthening India’s ability to maintain, modify and upgrade military platforms throughout their operational lives.
SHDS represents a long-running collaboration between HAL and Samtel Avionics. Established nearly two decades ago, the company holds the distinction of being India’s first public-private defence avionics joint venture to indigenously design, qualify and serially manufacture a multifunction display for induction on a fighter aircraft.
Indian Displays Already Flying on Su-30MKI
A major achievement of the partnership has been the indigenous multifunction display developed for the Indian Air Force’s Su-30MKI fighter fleet. SHDS-built displays are already operational aboard the aircraft, demonstrating the ability of Indian industry to manufacture defence-grade cockpit electronics meeting demanding aviation standards.
The joint venture is now widening its participation across HAL’s fixed-wing and rotary-wing aircraft programmes. Its growing involvement creates opportunities to build common indigenous capabilities in cockpit displays, avionics electronics, testing infrastructure and long-term product support across multiple aircraft families.
The company has also been selected for HAL’s Advanced Light Helicopter programme and is positioned to participate in other helicopter platforms, including the Light Combat Helicopter, as its avionics portfolio expands.
From Imported Displays to Indian Production
The HAL-Samtel collaboration reflects a broader transformation taking place within India’s aerospace supply chain. Avionics displays were once an area in which Indian aircraft programmes depended heavily on imported technology. Domestic development, qualification and serial production have gradually allowed Indian companies to take responsibility for increasingly sophisticated aircraft electronics.
HAL CMD Ravi K. described the new facility as an important milestone in strengthening indigenous defence avionics capability, bringing together HAL’s experience in military aviation with Samtel’s specialised expertise in display technologies. HAL has emphasised greater cooperation with Indian industry as part of its effort to accelerate indigenisation and reduce dependence on imported aerospace systems.
For SHDS, the Gurugram expansion also comes as its business scales up. The joint venture is expected to record annual turnover of around ₹200 crore, with its management indicating that revenue could potentially reach ₹400–500 crore over the next three to four years as additional programmes enter production.
Strengthening India’s Defence Electronics Supply Chain
Avionics has become one of the most strategically important components of modern combat aircraft. Displays, mission computers, sensors, navigation equipment, communications systems and electronic warfare interfaces increasingly determine the effectiveness of an aircraft just as much as its airframe or propulsion system.
Developing such systems domestically therefore has implications beyond replacing imports. Indigenous avionics give India greater control over upgrades, integration of Indian weapons and sensors, lifecycle maintenance and future modifications while creating a specialised domestic supplier ecosystem.
The new Gurugram facility strengthens this capability by bringing development, manufacturing, testing, quality assurance and product support closer together within an Indian industrial base.
With SHDS equipment already operational on frontline fighters and the joint venture expanding towards additional HAL platforms, the facility represents another step in the transition from localisation of individual components towards a deeper indigenous defence-avionics manufacturing ecosystem capable of supporting India’s present and future military aircraft programmes.
