India and Canada are working towards concluding a comprehensive trade agreement by the end of 2026, as both countries seek to strengthen economic ties and expand cooperation across trade, investment and technology.
The renewed push follows a series of bilateral engagements aimed at rebuilding momentum in the economic relationship and creating a more predictable framework for businesses operating between the two markets. Officials on both sides have indicated that the proposed agreement is expected to address barriers affecting goods and services while improving conditions for investment and commercial expansion.
Canada has highlighted the progress made in recent discussions and sees the agreement as a potential driver of higher bilateral trade and fresh investment flows. For India, the negotiations form part of a wider strategy to deepen trade partnerships with major economies and create new opportunities for Indian exporters, manufacturers and service providers.
The proposed pact is expected to cover a broad range of sectors, including goods, services, investment, technology and business facilitation. By reducing trade frictions and improving market access, the agreement could create new opportunities for companies in both countries and provide a stronger foundation for long-term economic cooperation.
India and Canada also see scope for greater collaboration in areas such as advanced manufacturing, clean technologies, digital services, innovation and investment. A comprehensive agreement could help institutionalise this cooperation while giving businesses greater certainty over tariffs, standards, regulatory requirements and market access.
Negotiators are now working to resolve outstanding issues and ensure that the final agreement reflects the economic priorities and strategic interests of both countries. Further rounds of discussions are expected as the two sides attempt to maintain momentum towards the end-2026 target.
