India Declares One-Day National Mourning for Former Qatar Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the country on all government buildings where it is regularly displayed. The government also announced that no official entertainment events will take place during the day of mourning.

India has declared Monday, July 13, 2026, as a day of national mourning to honor the memory of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir and former ruler of Qatar, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 74.

In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the National Flag will be flown at half-mast across the country on all government buildings where it is regularly displayed. The government also announced that no official entertainment events will take place during the day of mourning.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, describing Sheikh Hamad as a visionary leader who guided Qatar through a period of remarkable growth and prosperity. The Prime Minister also remembered him as a close friend of India and recalled meeting him during his visit to Qatar in February 2024. He extended his sympathies to the Amir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the royal family, and the people of Qatar.

The MEA further stated that Union Minister Kiren Rijiju is expected to travel to Qatar to convey condolences on behalf of the Government of India.

Earlier, Qatar’s Amiri Diwan officially announced the passing of Sheikh Hamad, paying tribute to his leadership and service to the nation.

Sheikh Hamad ruled Qatar from 1995 until 2013 and is widely recognized for transforming the country into a major global economic and diplomatic force. His tenure was marked by rapid development, the adoption of Qatar’s first permanent constitution in 2004, and the introduction of municipal elections that allowed women to vote and contest for public office.

India’s decision to observe a day of national mourning underscores the longstanding and friendly relations between the two countries and serves as a mark of respect for the late leader’s contributions.
