Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit, one of Norway’s most prestigious honours for foreign leaders, during a special ceremony held in Oslo. The honour was presented by His Majesty King Harald V of Norway as part of Prime Minister Modi’s official engagements in the country.
The award marks a symbolic moment in India-Norway relations, coming at a time when both countries are working to deepen cooperation in areas such as green technology, maritime partnership, clean energy, innovation and people-to-people ties. The honour was conferred in recognition of outstanding service in the interest of Norway and humanity, reflecting the growing goodwill between New Delhi and Oslo.
Speaking after receiving the award, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to the King and the people of Norway. He dedicated the honour to the historic friendship between India and Norway, describing it as a tribute to the trust, warmth and affection shared by the people of both nations.
The Royal Norwegian Order of Merit was founded by King Olav V in 1985. According to the Royal House of Norway, it is conferred on foreign and Norwegian nationals for outstanding service in the interest of Norway and mankind. The order is divided into five classes, with Grand Cross listed as the highest class.
The conferment is significant not merely as a ceremonial honour but as a diplomatic signal. Decorations of this level are generally reserved for individuals whose work has contributed to strengthening international relations, cooperation and goodwill. In Prime Minister Modi’s case, the award underlines Norway’s recognition of India’s growing global role and the increasing importance of the India-Norway partnership in areas beyond traditional diplomacy.
For India, the honour adds another layer to its expanding engagement with the Nordic region. Norway is an important partner in ocean governance, green shipping, renewable energy, Arctic research, fisheries, sustainable development and climate-related technologies. The award therefore comes at a moment when bilateral ties are being shaped by practical cooperation as well as shared global priorities.
The Oslo ceremony also reflects the broader diplomatic warmth between the two democracies. By dedicating the award to the friendship between the people of India and Norway, Prime Minister Modi framed the honour not as a personal recognition alone, but as a symbol of the long-term trust and collaboration between the two countries.
