PM Modi Receives Sweden’s Royal Order of the Polar Star, Becomes First Asian Leader to Get Honour

The honour is significant because it is Sweden’s highest distinction conferred on foreign Heads of Government for exceptional public service and contribution towards strengthening relations with Sweden. According to the Press Information Bureau, Prime Minister Modi is also the first Asian leader to receive this award, making the conferment an important diplomatic milestone for India as well as for India-Sweden relations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with Sweden’s Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross, one of the country’s oldest and most distinguished honours, during a special ceremony in Gothenburg. The award was presented by Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the Nordic nation.

The Royal Order of the Polar Star has a long historical legacy. The official website of the Royal Orders of Knighthood states that the order was instituted in 1748 and is meant to recognise personal endeavours for Sweden or Swedish interests, especially in public life, along with successful performance of public tasks and duties.

For India, the award comes at a time when relations with Sweden are expanding beyond traditional diplomacy into technology, innovation, green transition, defence industry, clean energy, advanced manufacturing and sustainable development. Sweden has emerged as an important European partner for India, particularly because of its strengths in engineering, innovation-led industries, green technologies and high-value manufacturing.

Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to Crown Princess Victoria and the people of Sweden after receiving the honour. He dedicated the award to the 1.4 billion people of India and to the enduring friendship between India and Sweden. He also described the honour as a reaffirmation of the historic ties and civilisational bonds between the two countries.

The award also carries symbolic value in the broader India-Europe partnership. India’s engagement with Nordic countries has grown steadily in recent years, especially in areas where India’s scale and Europe’s technological strengths can complement each other. Sweden’s recognition of the Indian Prime Minister therefore reflects not only personal diplomatic recognition but also the rising weight of India as a strategic, economic and technology partner.

The conferment of the Royal Order of the Polar Star adds another chapter to Prime Minister Modi’s list of international honours. News On AIR reported that this is his 31st global honour.

The Gothenburg ceremony underlines how ceremonial diplomacy can carry a larger strategic message. By honouring the Indian Prime Minister with one of its most respected decorations, Sweden has signalled the importance it attaches to its partnership with India at a time when both countries are looking to deepen cooperation in innovation, sustainability, trade and global governance.
