The National Statistics Office (NSO) has launched the first-ever Annual Survey of Incorporated Services Sector Enterprises (ASISSE), marking a significant step in building a comprehensive official database on India’s incorporated services economy. The survey, launched in April 2026, will cover all States and Union Territories with the reference period set as the financial year 2024–25.
The new survey comes at a time when the services sector contributes more than half of India’s GDP and remains one of the country’s biggest sources of jobs and economic expansion. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, ASISSE is expected to become a key source of official data on major service activities such as trade, transport, hospitality, information technology, education and health.
ASISSE will cover incorporated entities in the services sector, including companies registered under the Companies Act and limited liability partnerships under the LLP Act. The survey will use the GSTN database as its sampling frame, and more than 1.21 lakh enterprises are expected to be covered. The government said the exercise is designed to generate operational and economic indicators that can support evidence-based policymaking and deeper economic analysis.
The initiative also fills a major data gap in India’s statistical system. While the Annual Survey of Industries already tracks the registered manufacturing sector and the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises covers the unincorporated non-agricultural segment, ASISSE will bring the incorporated services sector into the same official survey framework. Together, these surveys are intended to provide a broader picture of the non-agricultural economy at both the state and industry level.
Data for the survey will be collected through a secure web-based portal under the provisions of the Collection of Statistics Act, 2008, as amended in 2017, along with the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023. Alongside the survey launch, NSO has also released “Know Your Survey: A User Guide to ASISSE”, a reader-friendly explainer meant to improve awareness, ease compliance, clarify reporting requirements and strengthen trust in official statistics.
