The Ministry of Defence has signed contracts worth approximately ₹975 crore with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) and Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics (India) Private Limited for the procurement of TRAWL assemblies designed for T-72 and T-90 tanks. The agreements were formalized on April 21, 2026, in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
The TRAWL assembly, developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is a vital system aimed at enhancing the Indian Army’s ability to breach minefields. It enables the creation of safe passage lanes for military vehicles through areas laden with anti-tank mines, including those equipped with proximity magnetic fuses, thereby significantly improving operational efficiency in combat scenarios.
The procurement falls under the “Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured)” category, reinforcing the government’s push for self-reliance under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Beyond strengthening defence preparedness, the project is also expected to generate substantial employment opportunities by boosting participation from the MSME sector in component manufacturing.
The T-72 and T-90 tanks, which will be equipped with these TRAWL systems, form the backbone of the Indian Army’s armored fleet. The T-72 has been in service for decades and is known for its reliability and adaptability in varied terrains, while the more advanced T-90 features enhanced firepower, mobility, and modern protection systems. Integrating TRAWL assemblies with these tanks will significantly boost their survivability and effectiveness during offensive operations, particularly in mine-contaminated battle zones.
