Israeli President Isaac Herzog announced the decision on October 8, 2026, during a ceremony at the President’s Residence in Jerusalem. The ceremony honoured six Israeli civilians who helped bring the emergency under control aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 on September 30.

Herzog praised the Indian captain’s courage and professionalism, confirming that he would personally present the award after Machchhar recovered sufficiently from his injuries.

The announcement follows official recognition of the pilot’s actions by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and authorities in the United Arab Emirates.

Israeli President Announces Civilian Heroism Award for Indian Pilot

President Isaac Herzog announced the honour while recognising six Israeli civilians who participated in the emergency response aboard the Dubai–Tel Aviv flight.

The Israeli President credited Captain Machchhar’s determination and professional conduct with helping prevent a major aviation disaster. He also conveyed his wishes for the Indian pilot’s recovery.

Herzog confirmed that Machchhar would receive the State of Israel’s Presidential Award for Civilian Heroism once his health permitted him to attend the presentation.

The award recognises exceptional courage demonstrated by civilians who place themselves at considerable personal risk to protect others. Herzog established the presidential recognition following the October 7, 2023, attacks in Israel.

By extending the honour to an Indian national, Israel has formally acknowledged Machchhar’s contribution to protecting the lives of passengers and crew during an extraordinary aviation emergency.

Flydubai Flight FZ1073 Diverted After Cockpit Attack

The incident occurred on September 30, 2026, aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai International Airport to Tel Aviv.

According to the United Arab Emirates’ official Emirates News Agency, an altercation occurred inside the aircraft’s flight deck, prompting other crew members travelling aboard the aircraft to intervene.

The aircraft subsequently diverted and landed safely at Tabuk Airport in Saudi Arabia.

On October 1, UAE Attorney-General Dr Hamad Saif Al Shamsi ordered the establishment of a specialised investigation team to examine the incident. The investigation involved the Public Prosecution, the General Civil Aviation Authority and other relevant authorities.

The Attorney-General subsequently confirmed on October 3 that investigators had established that the co-pilot attempted to carry out a terrorist act during the flight.

According to the official UAE statement, the co-pilot attacked Captain Machchhar with a crash axe inside the cockpit while attempting to seize control of the aircraft’s flight controls.

The authorities stated that investigations were continuing to determine the complete circumstances, motives and possible connections associated with the incident.

Injured Captain Helps Passengers Intervene

Captain Machchhar’s actions during the cockpit emergency were central to preventing the attacker from taking control of the aircraft.

Despite suffering serious injuries, he resisted the attack and managed to unlock the cockpit door. This enabled other people aboard the aircraft to intervene and overpower the assailant.

An official statement from the Embassy of Israel in Australia confirmed that the Indian captain fought back despite his injuries and opened the cockpit door, allowing Israeli passengers to restrain the attacker.

Two off-duty pilots subsequently helped bring the aircraft under control and ensured its safe landing in Saudi Arabia.

The Israeli government also acknowledged the cooperation demonstrated by passengers and crew from different countries during the emergency.

The incident highlighted the importance of professional judgement and coordinated action in circumstances where the safety of an entire aircraft depends on decisions made within seconds.

Six Israeli Civilians Receive Presidential Bravery Awards

At the October 8 ceremony in Jerusalem, President Herzog honoured six Israeli civilians for their roles in preventing the aviation disaster.

The recipients included passengers who intervened during the cockpit attack, individuals who helped alert others to the emergency and a medical professional who assisted the injured captain.

Among those recognised was Dr Shota Musayev, who provided emergency medical assistance to Machchhar following the attack.

Their actions helped stabilise the situation while the aircraft continued towards its emergency landing.

President Herzog described the collective response as an example of courage and determination under extreme circumstances. The ceremony recognised the contribution of passengers, medical professionals and aviation personnel who worked together to protect the people aboard the aircraft.

Machchhar’s award will be presented separately after his recovery.

Prime Minister Modi Praises Captain Machchhar’s Courage

Prime Minister Narendra Modi publicly praised Captain Machchhar on October 1, describing his actions as an extraordinary demonstration of courage under life-threatening circumstances.

In an official statement published by the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi commended the Indian pilot’s determination to protect others despite suffering serious injuries.

The Prime Minister emphasised that Machchhar’s actions helped save hundreds of lives and prevent a major tragedy.

During the centenary celebrations of the Union Public Service Commission, Modi again highlighted the pilot’s bravery, stating that his actions had helped avert a disaster comparable to the September 11 attacks in the United States.

He also conveyed the nation’s appreciation for Machchhar and expressed hope for his complete recovery.

The official statements reflected the significance attached to the Indian captain’s actions and the international recognition they had received.

Modi Personally Speaks to Injured Pilot During Recovery

On October 2, Prime Minister Modi held a video conversation with Captain Machchhar while the pilot was receiving medical treatment.

According to the Prime Minister’s Office, Modi began by enquiring about the captain’s health and assuring him that people across India were praying for his recovery.

The Prime Minister praised Machchhar’s ability to make critical decisions under extreme pressure and acknowledged his determination to protect the lives of passengers and crew.

During the conversation, Modi also thanked the governments of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates for the medical assistance provided to the injured pilot.

He expressed appreciation for the captain’s family and their composure during the difficult period following the attack.

The conversation underscored the national importance of the incident and the recognition extended to an Indian aviation professional whose actions had attracted international attention.

Netanyahu Invites Indian Pilot to Israel’s Independence Day Celebrations

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also personally acknowledged Captain Machchhar’s bravery following the September 30 incident.

Netanyahu spoke with the injured pilot and praised his determination during the cockpit emergency.

He subsequently invited Machchhar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to participate in Israel’s Independence Day celebrations, including the ceremonial lighting of a flame.

The invitation represented an additional expression of Israel’s appreciation for the Indian captain’s actions.

The presidential bravery award announced on October 8 is separate from the Independence Day invitation.

Together, the gestures reflect the recognition extended by Israel’s political leadership to Machchhar for helping protect passengers during the attempted attack.

UAE Investigation Continues into Attempted Terrorist Act

The United Arab Emirates has confirmed that the cockpit attack is being investigated as an attempted terrorist act.

In its October 3 statement, the UAE Attorney-General said investigators were examining the circumstances of the attack, including its planning, possible motives and any connections involving the suspect.

The investigation includes technical examinations and analysis of physical and digital evidence.

UAE authorities have emphasised that the final findings will be announced after the necessary investigative procedures are completed.

The official investigation therefore establishes the attempted seizure of the aircraft’s controls and the violent assault on its captain, while the complete findings concerning the attacker’s intentions and possible wider connections remain pending.

The incident has also brought renewed attention to cockpit security, aviation emergency procedures and the importance of coordinated responses to threats aboard commercial aircraft.

Indian Pilot’s Bravery Receives International Recognition

Captain Smit Machchhar’s actions aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073 have received recognition from India, Israel and the United Arab Emirates.

The Indian captain’s decision to resist the attacker and enable others to intervene played a crucial role in preventing a potentially devastating aviation disaster.

His actions were complemented by those of passengers, medical personnel and off-duty pilots, demonstrating the importance of coordinated emergency response under extreme pressure.

Israel’s decision to confer its highest civilian bravery award on Machchhar represents a significant international acknowledgement of his courage and professional commitment.

As he continues his recovery, the recognition honours an Indian aviation professional whose determination helped protect 174 lives and whose actions have become an example of courage, responsibility and humanity beyond national boundaries.
