India, Trinidad and Tobago Deepen Parliamentary Ties

India and Trinidad and Tobago have taken another step towards strengthening parliamentary cooperation, with Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh meeting Jagdeo Singh, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Trinidad and Tobago, in Cape Town on September 17.

The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in South Africa, where Harivansh is leading an Indian parliamentary delegation. The conference brings together parliamentarians and presiding officers from across the Commonwealth to discuss legislative practices, democratic institutions and issues affecting member countries.

During their meeting, Harivansh and Jagdeo Singh exchanged views on strengthening parliamentary engagement between India and Trinidad and Tobago. The interaction adds to a series of recent exchanges intended to deepen institutional links between the legislatures of the two countries.

Parliamentary Engagement Gains Momentum

Parliamentary cooperation between India and Trinidad and Tobago has received fresh momentum during 2026. In January, Jagdeo Singh visited New Delhi to participate in the 28th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth, providing an opportunity for engagement with Indian parliamentary leaders.

India subsequently constituted a Parliamentary Friendship Group for Trinidad and Tobago in March 2026. Such groups provide legislators with an institutional mechanism for maintaining dialogue, exchanging experiences and developing contacts beyond formal government-to-government diplomacy.

The Cape Town meeting therefore follows an emerging pattern of more regular parliamentary exchanges rather than standing as an isolated interaction.

A Relationship Rooted in Strong People-to-People Links

India and Trinidad and Tobago share longstanding historical and cultural connections shaped substantially by the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean nation. People of Indian origin constitute a major part of Trinidad and Tobago’s population, creating extensive cultural, religious and familial connections with India.

These ties have developed alongside formal cooperation in areas including trade, education, healthcare, culture, capacity building and information technology. Parliamentary diplomacy provides another channel through which the two countries can strengthen institutional relationships while maintaining their longstanding people-to-people connections.

India has also been steadily expanding its diplomatic engagement with Caribbean countries, both bilaterally and through mechanisms involving the Caribbean Community. Greater parliamentary interaction complements this wider outreach by creating direct links between elected representatives and legislative institutions.

India Expands Parliamentary Outreach at Commonwealth Conference

Harivansh’s participation in the Cape Town conference forms part of India’s broader engagement with legislatures across the Commonwealth. The Indian delegation is participating in the 69th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference being held from September 12 to 19.

During the visit, Harivansh has also engaged with parliamentary leaders from South Africa and other participating countries, using the gathering as a platform for bilateral discussions alongside the conference proceedings.

The meeting with Jagdeo Singh adds a Caribbean dimension to this outreach and provides continuity to the parliamentary exchanges that have developed between India and Trinidad and Tobago during the year.

With the establishment of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, Jagdeo Singh’s visit to New Delhi and the latest interaction in Cape Town, parliamentary engagement is becoming a more structured component of the wider relationship between the two countries.
