India’s coal sector recorded strong growth in July 2026, with coal production increasing by 7.51% year-on-year to 69.75 million tonnes (MT) (provisional), up from 64.88 MT in July 2025.
Coal dispatch posted an even stronger performance, rising 17.34% year-on-year to 86.33 MT (provisional), compared with 73.57 MT during the corresponding month last year. The Ministry of Coal attributed the growth to its continued focus on ensuring a stable coal supply and improving operational efficiency across the sector.
During the first four months of FY 2026–27 (up to July), cumulative coal production reached 302.24 MT (provisional), while cumulative dispatch stood at 354.70 MT (provisional), reflecting a 5.87% increase over the same period of the previous financial year.
Coal India Limited (CIL) remained the largest contributor, producing 50.35 MT (provisional) in July 2026, an 8.42% increase over July 2025. The company also dispatched 63.67 MT (provisional) during the month, registering 17.43% year-on-year growth. CIL’s cumulative coal dispatch for FY 2026–27 up to July also rose 6.81% compared with the corresponding period last year.
The Ministry of Coal reiterated its commitment to sustainable growth, enhancing domestic coal availability, and reducing dependence on imports. The continued improvement in production and dispatch reinforces the sector’s vital role in supporting India’s energy security and economic growth.
