“We set up the defence unit in 2016, encouraged by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India call. We started making armour-plated bodies for vehicles that were delivered to the paramilitary forces in 2017, in technical partnership with an American firm. Once inaugurated, this tunnel will become one of the longest road tunnels in the country, being built at an elevation of 10171 ft under the Rohtang Pass. And with the opening of this tunnel, it will reduce the distance between Lahaul-Spiti’s administrative centre Keylong and Manaliby around 45 km. This will also help the Leh-Manali highway to remain open to traffic even during winters, thereby benefitting residents of Himachal Pradesh’s tribal district Lahaul-Spiti and newly the formed union territory, i.e., Ladakh.
According to a source in the ministry, the government had in the first phase planned to construct 61 roads along the India-China border totalling 3,346 km. Of these, 36 roads (1,260 km) have been constructed, while links have been established in 20 others (2,035 km) which are being tested. Work on the remaining five roads has begun and will be completed soon.
With an annual capacity to manufacture 240 sets, the new Snorkel Manufacturing line features high-accuracy automated equipment like zero-tolerance grinding machines and high-temperature dryers to produce Snorkels that match global standards. Dalmia-OCL’s onsite R&D centre Dalmia Institute Scientific and Industrial Research (DISIR), will also help accelerate further innovations in refractory technology for clean steel production.
