NEW DELHI: Gulf’s resource rich Kuwait has played a key role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC) in declaring JeM chief Masood Azhar a global terrorist and earlier an equally important role in UNSC condemnation of Pulwama terror strike.
Kuwait that completes its two year term as the non-permanent member in the UNSC has assured to play an important role in supporting India’s global ambitions including investments.
“The Security Council of the United Nations adopted its first ever Kuwaiti proposed draft resolution 2474 in its 8543rd meeting held on June 11, 2019 in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Khaled AlHamad AlSabah, with the aim of protecting civilians that deals with the matter of persons reported missing during armed conflicts. The Council called upon parties of armed conflicts to take all appropriate measures, to actively search for persons reported missing, to enable the return of their remains and to account for persons reported missing “without adverse distinction,” the Kuwait Embassy in India noted in a
statement.
The Council urged the international community and member states of the United Nations to cooperate with relevant bodies such as the International committee of the Red Cross.
“The State of Kuwait actively engages in the sessions of United Nations and the last was on June 20, 2019 when the Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2475 on Protection of Persons with Disabilities in conflicts calling up member states and parties of armed conflicts to protect persons with disabilities in conflict situations and to ensure they have access to justice, basic services and unimpeded humanitarian assistance . This reflects the status of Kuwaiti diplomacy on the humanitarian level.”
Kuwait during its tenure in UNSC also tried to play key role in the Arab World.
“…Sheikh Sabah Khaled AlHamad AlSabah, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait applauded in a statement made on June 28,2019 the decision of UN Security Council to undertake a visit to the State of Kuwait and Republic of Iraq under the joint leadership of the US and the State of Kuwait, hoping that the scheduled visit to the Republic of Iraq will yield the desired success in the way of realizing the targets and it comes when the Iraqi government is in need of support to stand by its international obligations for eradicating terrorism in addition to rebuilding and enhancing the humanitarian situation over there,” the Embassy noted.
