Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has stated that a significant portion of the infrastructure and technical expertise required for potential production of the Su-57E fifth-generation fighter aircraft in India is already available, largely due to decades of experience manufacturing the Su-30MKI fighter programme.
According to HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi Kotta, around 40% of the required infrastructure for Su-57 production already exists within the organisation. However, additional investments would be necessary to establish the remaining specialised facilities and production capabilities needed for manufacturing the advanced fifth-generation fighter.
The existing capabilities developed through the Su-30MKI programme provide HAL with experience in large fighter aircraft assembly, aerospace manufacturing, component integration and supply-chain management.
Su-30MKI Experience Creates Industrial Base for Fifth-Generation Fighter
HAL has been manufacturing the Su-30MKI under licence for the Indian Air Force for more than two decades. The programme has helped India develop extensive capabilities in fighter aircraft production, including structural assembly, systems integration, maintenance support and indigenous component manufacturing.
The Su-30MKI ecosystem has also created a network of Indian suppliers involved in aerospace components, electronics, machining and precision manufacturing.
These capabilities could provide a foundation for any future Su-57E manufacturing programme, although fifth-generation aircraft production would require additional infrastructure for stealth materials, advanced manufacturing processes, specialised coatings and next-generation avionics integration.
Russia Offers Su-57E Cooperation Option
Russia has offered India the export variant of its Su-57 fifth-generation fighter, along with possibilities for local manufacturing through industrial cooperation.
The Su-57E is designed as a multirole stealth fighter incorporating low-observable features, advanced avionics, internal weapons carriage, supercruise capability and network-centric warfare systems.
Any Indian production arrangement would require negotiations covering:
- Manufacturing rights
- Technology transfer
- Indigenous content
- Engine support and localisation
- Avionics integration
- Maintenance and lifecycle support
As of now, a final production agreement has not been publicly announced.
India’s Fifth-Generation Fighter Path
The Su-57E discussions come alongside India’s own indigenous fifth-generation fighter programme — the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA).
The AMCA, being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) with HAL as the production partner, remains India’s long-term effort to develop an indigenous stealth fighter capability.
A potential Su-57E acquisition or production arrangement would represent a separate pathway, providing possible access to an operational fifth-generation platform while AMCA development continues.
Infrastructure Readiness Does Not Mean Immediate Production
While HAL’s existing industrial base provides an advantage, establishing a Su-57 production line would require several additional steps, including government approval, contract finalisation, production planning, tooling installation, supplier preparation and aircraft certification.
Therefore, claims that the first Indian-built Su-57 could arrive within two years should be treated as speculative unless confirmed through an official production agreement and timeline.
India’s Aerospace Manufacturing Capability Continues to Expand
HAL’s assessment highlights the growing maturity of India’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.
From Su-30MKI production to Tejas fighter manufacturing, helicopter development and future programmes such as LCA Mk2 and AMCA, India has steadily expanded its ability to design, manufacture and support advanced military aircraft.
The possibility of Su-57E production discussions further demonstrates the strategic importance of India’s aerospace industrial base and its growing role in future fighter aircraft manufacturing.
