Bharat Dynamics Expands Missile Manufacturing Network Across India

Defence PSU Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) is expanding its missile and weapon-manufacturing footprint as India prepares for higher domestic defence requirements and growing export opportunities.

BDL’s latest FY2025-26 Business Responsibility and Sustainability disclosure, filed on September 3, 2026, reiterates the company’s expansion beyond its traditional production centres. The company has evolved from primarily being a missile manufacturer into a broader weapon-system integrator producing guided missiles, underwater weapons, airborne systems and associated defence equipment.

BDL currently lists four manufacturing units: Hyderabad, Bhanur and Ibrahimpatnam in Telangana, and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh. It is also developing additional facilities at Amravati in Maharashtra and Jhansi in the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor.

The Ibrahimpatnam facility represents a major capacity addition. BDL disclosed earlier this year that it includes eight assembly lines for new weapon systems along with specialised infrastructure for rocket-motor testing and warhead-penetration testing. The site is intended to support future missile programmes and increase production flexibility.

At Jhansi, BDL is establishing a specialised facility focused on propellant manufacturing. The plant is also planned to support bulk manufacture of Grad rockets and in-house research into new energetic materials. The project forms part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor and is intended to reduce dependence on external sources for critical propulsion-related materials.

The Amravati facility in Maharashtra has historically been associated with production of Very Short Range Air Defence, or VSHORAD, missile systems. BDL’s current corporate information confirms that the company continues to develop Amravati as part of its wider expansion programme.

The capacity expansion is being driven by a substantial pipeline of missile requirements. In March 2026, BDL disclosed an order book of approximately ₹26,000 crore and said it envisaged receiving around ₹15,000 crore of additional orders during FY2026-27.

Alongside conventional guided missiles, BDL is also preparing to diversify into air-to-air and air-to-surface weapons, air-defence systems, rockets, bombs, cruise-missile engines, UAV-launched weapons, underwater weapons and mines. The company is simultaneously pursuing technology partnerships with DRDO, foreign OEMs, Indian companies, academic institutions and startups.

The expansion therefore represents more than an increase in factory capacity. By adding missile assembly lines, propellant production, specialised testing and new energetic-material capabilities across several states, BDL is building a more vertically integrated domestic manufacturing network for India’s future missile programmes.
