Kirloskar Oil Engines and DEUTZ Join Forces on Global 1.6-Litre Engine Platform

Indian manufacturer Kirloskar Oil Engines Limited (KOEL) has entered into a strategic cooperation with Germany’s DEUTZ AG to expand a new 1.6-litre compact engine platform across Europe and North America.

Announced on September 2, 2026, the partnership combines Kirloskar’s engineering and large-scale manufacturing capabilities with DEUTZ’s established international sales, distribution and service network. The collaboration is aimed at strengthening the companies’ presence in the global under-2-litre off-highway engine segment.

At the centre of the partnership is the R550 three-cylinder, 1.6-litre engine family, which will be offered in naturally aspirated and turbocharged configurations. The platform covers a power range of approximately 18 kW to 41.2 kW, or 24 to 56 horsepower, making it suitable for compact construction equipment, material-handling machines and a variety of industrial applications.

A major advantage of the new platform is its compliance with stringent international emission regulations. The engines are designed to meet European Union Stage V as well as US EPA and California CARB Tier 4 requirements, allowing the platform to be deployed in some of the world’s most tightly regulated industrial-equipment markets.

For Kirloskar Oil Engines, the cooperation provides a pathway to expand its compact-engine business internationally without having to independently create an extensive overseas distribution and service ecosystem. DEUTZ already operates a large global network supporting industrial engines and drive systems across major developed markets.

The agreement also builds on an existing industrial relationship between the two companies. KOEL President for Global Industrial Business Anmol Batra said the companies have a long history of cooperation in engines and drive solutions and that the latest agreement will extend their work into compact-drive applications globally.

The partnership could also strengthen India’s position as a manufacturing base for sophisticated industrial engines. Kirloskar already produces engines for power generation, construction, agriculture and other off-highway applications, with its broader industrial portfolio extending from approximately 20 hp to 750 hp.

The new 1.6-litre platform fills the smaller end of this range while giving KOEL greater access to equipment manufacturers in Europe and North America.

For DEUTZ, the arrangement provides access to Kirloskar’s engineering capabilities and Indian manufacturing scale while expanding its offering in the compact-engine segment.

The cooperation therefore goes beyond a conventional export arrangement. It combines Indian engineering and manufacturing with an established German global distribution network, creating a platform designed from the outset for demanding international markets.

If the programme scales successfully, the R550 could become another example of an Indian-manufactured industrial technology platform moving beyond the domestic market and competing directly in Europe and North America.
