GRSE Partners DNV and Damen to Expand Advanced Shipbuilding and Indigenous Dredger Technology

Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited has signed two international technology partnerships with DNV and Damen Technical Cooperation B.V. to strengthen India’s capabilities in advanced shipbuilding, green maritime technology and indigenous dredger construction.

The agreements were signed on September 2, 2026 at SMM Hamburg. GRSE has clarified that these are cooperation frameworks rather than confirmed orders, and no immediate financial impact has been disclosed.

Under the partnership with DNV, GRSE will collaborate in areas including advanced warships and specialised vessels, green shipping, digital shipbuilding, artificial intelligence, Industry 4.0, technical assurance, training and knowledge exchange. The cooperation could help GRSE integrate modern digital design, production and lifecycle-management systems while strengthening its ability to compete for sophisticated naval and commercial shipbuilding projects.

The second MoU, with Damen Technical Cooperation, focuses on the design and construction of advanced dredgers in India. The partnership covers technology cooperation, transfer of technical know-how, joint proposals and development of indigenous dredger-building capability, including platforms such as Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers and Water Injection Dredgers.

The Damen partnership builds on an existing relationship. GRSE had earlier secured a contract to build a 1,000-cubic-metre Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger for the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority, with Damen providing design support. The new MoU potentially expands that project-level relationship into a broader long-term technology partnership.

Dredging is strategically important for India because ports, navigation channels and inland waterways require continuous maintenance to retain sufficient depth for larger ships. Greater domestic capability in specialised dredger construction could reduce dependence on foreign designs and create new opportunities for Indian shipyards in both domestic and export markets.

The DNV and Damen agreements also reflect GRSE’s broader transformation from primarily a naval shipbuilder into a diversified maritime engineering company. The PSU is increasingly expanding into commercial vessels, green ships, export programmes, digital technologies and specialised platforms.

Taken together, the two partnerships address different but complementary capabilities. DNV can strengthen GRSE’s digital, green and technical-assurance expertise, while Damen can help deepen indigenous dredger design and construction capability.

The agreements therefore represent another step towards expanding India’s ability to build more sophisticated naval, commercial and specialised maritime platforms domestically.
