NHPC to Become World’s Largest Floating Solar Company

NHPC intends to become the world’s biggest floating solar power company and will hold the record for a very long time. The company proposes to build 2,850 MW floating solar power plants on various reservoirs of the country.

In April 2020, the company received the in-principle approval from the Kerala State Electricity Board to construct 50 MW floating solar plant on the West Kallada reservoir.In April 2020, the company received the in-principle approval from the Kerala State Electricity Board to construct 50 MW floating solar plant on the West Kallada reservoir.

Right now, preparatory actions have been initiated for tendering out for selecting a company to build the project. One of its major plans involves a joint venture (JV) with another public sector company, Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC), to build 1,800 MW of floating solar projects, spread over many reservoirs.

Preparations are going for a memorandum of understanding for a joint venture (JV) with the Green Energy Development Corporation, the renewable energy development agency of Odisha, for floating solar plants of total capacity of 500 MW.

The company is also working on 500 MW more in collaboration with the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation. These too will be many projects but all in the Mid-Manair Dam, Karim Nagar, Telangana area. In 2019, the Madhya Pradesh government planned to build 1,000 MW floating solar project on its Indira Sagar reservoir
