TRICHY: With the commissioning of a two MegaWatt solar power plant on Thursday, Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Trichy is expected to bring down two-third of its conventional energy consumption.
The solar plant spread around an artificial lake on campus was installed at a cost of Rs14.20 crore. The project was sponsored by the Rural Electrification Corporation Limited (RECL) as part of its CSR initiative.
Officials said that the power plant had been under trial run for the last one month and it is expected to bring down 60%-70% of electricity consumption of IIM Trichy.
“We are also planning to give the excess power to Tangedco when the consumption drops during vacations,” said a senior official.
“The control system of this project and its functioning being potential research areas, we have plans to allow PhD students from various institutions to doing research in this area,” added the official.
IIM Trichy is the first among 20 IIMs to have received such funding from RECL, said its director Bhimaraya Metri while sharing his vision for an entire green IIM Trichy campus.
The project was commissioned through virtual mode by chief guest Sanjeev Kumar Gupta, chairman and managing director, Rural Electrification Corporation Limited, New Delhi.
