In the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, a fierce gunfight broke-out between terrorists and security forces in Turkawangam village of Shopian district this morning.
Defence PRO said that the joint team of Shopian Police, 44 Rashtriya Rifles & Central Reserve Police Force launched a Cordon & Search Operation (CASO) in Turkawangam village, based on an intelligence input about the presence of terrorists in the village.
The Spokesperson said that when security forces approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired upon them. The fire was effectively retaliated by the joint team, triggering off an encounter which resulted into the elimination of three terrorists. The slain terrorists are locals and belonged to terror outfit Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM). Two AK-47 and one INSAS were recovered from the site of encounter.
With these killings, 19 Hizb-ul-Mujahideen terrorists including top commanders were killed in south Kashmir’s Shopian and Kulgam districts during this month alone.
Internet services in Kulgam district has been snapped by the authorities as a precautionary measure. Meanwhile, Defence Spokesperson Col. Rajesh Kalia said that Pakistan initiated an unprovoked ceasefire violation along the LoC in Tangdhar Sector in Kupwara district in the wee hours today by firing Mortars and other weapons. However, befitting response is being given by the Indian Army.
