Indian Army’s new Integrated Battle Groups to be introduced in early 2020

Operation Sindoor Showed India’s Push Towards Multi-Domain Jointness, Says Army Chief

Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi has said that India is steadily moving towards deeper domain jointness, and that Operation Sindoor offered a clear demonstration of that shift in practice. Speaking in Bengaluru at the Ran Samvad tri-services forum on multi-domain operations, he said the future battlefield can no longer be viewed through isolated service boundaries, as land, air and maritime power now increasingly converge with cyber, space and information domains.

According to the Army Chief, the country’s military thinking is progressing from basic jointness toward tighter domain integration and fusion. The emphasis is on building a framework in which the Army, Air Force and Navy operate with closer coordination while also incorporating newer arenas such as cybersecurity, space applications and information campaigns into a more unified theatre-level approach.

The discussion at Ran Samvad also highlighted how India’s armed forces are adapting to the demands of modern warfare. The event, themed around multi-domain operations and the need to address both conventional and irregular threats, reflected a growing recognition that future conflicts will require synchronized action across kinetic and non-kinetic fronts rather than service-specific responses alone.

In a related session, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi argued for a more integrated fleet structure and an optimum mix of low-cost and high-end capabilities. He said future warfare would depend on seamless linkages across domains, combining long-range precision strike power with kinetic and non-kinetic defensive capabilities. He also pointed to the growing relevance of unmanned and autonomous systems, along with cyber, quantum technologies, robotics, artificial intelligence and information dissemination, as key enablers of faster decision-making and coordinated operations across the three services.

Taken together, the remarks from the two chiefs underline a broader transformation in India’s military posture. The direction is toward an integrated warfighting model in which domain awareness, technological convergence and cross-service coordination become central to preparedness, deterrence and operational effectiveness in an increasingly complex security environment.
