In a significant move aimed at shaping the next phase of battlefield modernisation, the Indian Army on April 6, 2026 unveiled a technology roadmap for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and loitering munitions in New Delhi. The roadmap is intended to give long-term visibility on the Army’s future requirements in drone warfare and help align domestic technological development with operational needs.
According to the Army, the document is designed to provide clear and actionable guidance to industry, academia and research and development institutions so that investments and innovation can be directed toward priority capability areas identified by the service. In effect, the roadmap seeks to reduce uncertainty for developers and create a more demand-driven pathway for India’s growing drone ecosystem.
The Army said the roadmap serves as a critical bridge between battlefield requirements and technology development, ensuring that the evolution of India’s drone ecosystem proceeds in a structured manner rather than through fragmented efforts. The initiative is expected to support better planning in areas such as surveillance drones, strike-capable unmanned systems and loitering munitions tailored to future combat scenarios.
Speaking at the event, Deputy Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Rahul R. Singh underlined the rapidly changing character of warfare and the expanding role of drones in contemporary conflicts. He said recent wars have shown the importance of balancing large-scale drone deployment with precision targeting, a lesson that is increasingly shaping military procurement and doctrine worldwide.
The event brought together representatives from the armed forces, defence industry, start-ups and academia, reflecting what the report described as a whole-of-nation approach to building a resilient and self-reliant drone ecosystem. The launch also fits into the broader push to connect military requirements more directly with India’s indigenous defence innovation base.
