India added a record 6.05 GW of wind energy capacity in 2025–26, marking the highest-ever annual addition in the country’s wind sector and surpassing the previous high of 5.5 GW recorded in 2016–17. The latest expansion also represents a nearly 46 per cent increase over the capacity added in 2024–25, signalling a sharp acceleration in onshore wind deployment.
With the fresh additions, India’s cumulative installed wind power capacity has now crossed 56 GW, reinforcing the sector’s growing role in the country’s renewable energy mix. The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said the momentum reflects a combination of clearer policy direction, better transmission readiness, competitive tariff discovery and a strong pipeline of upcoming projects.
The government said states such as Gujarat, Karnataka and Maharashtra were among the key contributors to capacity growth during the year. The expansion has also been supported by a rising pipeline of wind-solar hybrid projects and the gradual rollout of green energy open access, which has improved the sector’s investment and execution environment.
According to the ministry, a series of policy measures has helped push the sector forward, including concessional customs duty on select wind turbine components and raw materials, a graded waiver of Inter-State Transmission System charges until June 2028, competitive bidding mechanisms, separate Wind Renewable Consumption Obligation frameworks and technical support from the National Institute of Wind Energy.
The record annual addition is expected to strengthen India’s wider clean energy transition and support the national target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030. India’s wind energy programme, which began in the early 1990s, has since evolved into one of the world’s major wind power markets through a steadily expanding ecosystem and policy framework for grid-connected projects.
