In a fresh boost to India’s coastal security modernisation drive, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai on April 6, 2026 hosted the keel laying ceremony of Fast Patrol Vessel-4 (FPV-4) and the plate cutting ceremony of FPV-7 under the Indian Coast Guard’s 14-vessel fast patrol vessel project. The ceremonies covered Yard 16504 and Yard 16507 respectively, as part of the broader FPV programme spanning Yard 16501 to Yard 16514.
The new vessels are being fitted with advanced onboard systems, including an AI-based predictive maintenance system and multipurpose drones, reflecting a shift toward more technology-enabled maritime operations. According to the Ministry of Defence, the ships will also carry significant indigenous content, including gear boxes supplied by Triveni of Mysore and water jets from MJP India.
Designed as water-jet propelled fast patrol vessels with an approximate displacement of 340 tonnes, the ships are intended for coastal security and law-enforcement duties. Their role is expected to be especially relevant as India continues to strengthen surveillance, interdiction and rapid-response capabilities across its maritime zones.
The Defence Ministry said the construction milestones are aligned with the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat push and will help enhance the Indian Coast Guard’s operational presence in the Indian Ocean Region.
