India is set to mark a major milestone in rural infrastructure development as the Government prepares to celebrate 25 years of the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) with the national launch of PMGSY-IV on May 10 at Bhairunda in Madhya Pradesh’s Sehore district. The programme is expected to underline the Centre’s renewed focus on rural connectivity, infrastructure expansion and last-mile development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Union Minister for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, will lead the event in the presence of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and several senior Union and State officials. The programme is being projected not merely as a commemorative event, but as a large-scale celebration of rural transformation driven by improved road connectivity and infrastructure expansion across India’s villages.

During the event, the Union Government will hand over approvals under PMGSY-IV for 973 rural roads covering a total length of 2,117 kilometres in Madhya Pradesh. These projects are expected to benefit 987 habitations across the state. In addition, more than 384 kilometres of road projects under the PM-JANMAN initiative will also receive approval, directly benefiting 168 backward habitations.

The Centre will also announce an allocation of ₹18,907 crore for PMGSY during the financial year 2026-27, aimed at further strengthening rural connectivity across the country. Out of this, Madhya Pradesh alone will receive ₹830 crore for rural road development projects. Officials said the allocation is expected to improve access to education, healthcare, agricultural markets and employment opportunities in remote rural regions.

According to the Ministry of Rural Development, PMGSY has played a transformative role in connecting villages with durable all-weather roads over the past 25 years, significantly improving economic activity and social inclusion in rural India. The launch of PMGSY-IV is being seen as the next phase in India’s technology-driven rural road construction programme, with a stronger focus on connectivity expansion and infrastructure quality.

The event will also include the felicitation of states that have demonstrated outstanding performance in implementing rural road projects. Senior officials stated that the initiative reflects the government’s broader vision of ensuring that infrastructure-led growth reaches the last mile in rural India.
