India Expands Diplomatic Presence in Central America with New Embassy in Costa Rica

The establishment of a resident diplomatic mission provides India with a permanent diplomatic presence in Costa Rica. It will enable more regular engagement between government officials, businesses and institutions in both countries.

India has expanded its diplomatic presence in Central America by operationalising a new resident diplomatic mission in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, with effect from October 10, 2026. The development marks an important step in strengthening India’s engagement with Central American countries and expanding bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, technology and diplomacy.

The Ministry of External Affairs announced the development on October 13, 2026, highlighting the government’s commitment to building closer relationships with Costa Rica and increasing India’s diplomatic outreach across the region.

New Indian Embassy to Strengthen Bilateral Relations

The establishment of a resident diplomatic mission provides India with a permanent diplomatic presence in Costa Rica. It will enable more regular engagement between government officials, businesses and institutions in both countries.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the mission will facilitate closer political consultations, promote bilateral trade and investment, and strengthen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

A resident embassy also creates opportunities for sustained diplomatic dialogue on regional developments and international issues. India and Costa Rica can now coordinate more directly through their respective diplomatic missions.

Trade, Pharmaceuticals and Information Technology Offer Opportunities

India and Costa Rica have been exploring opportunities to expand their economic relationship, particularly in trade, investment, pharmaceuticals and information technology.

India’s pharmaceutical industry offers opportunities for cooperation in medicines and healthcare products, while the country’s expanding digital technology sector provides a foundation for partnerships in information technology and related services.

The new diplomatic mission will support engagement between businesses and institutions, facilitate commercial exchanges and encourage investment opportunities.

Costa Rica’s location in Central America also makes it an important partner for India’s broader economic engagement with countries across the region.

Stronger Diplomatic Engagement with Central America

The opening of the embassy forms part of India’s expanding diplomatic outreach to countries in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Central America occupies an important geographical position connecting North and South America. Closer relations with countries such as Costa Rica provide India with opportunities to develop new commercial partnerships and strengthen cooperation in regional and multilateral forums.

The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the resident mission would facilitate stronger people-to-people contacts and more sustained engagement with Costa Rica on regional and international matters.

The permanent diplomatic presence will also support cultural exchanges, institutional cooperation and regular consultations between the two governments.

Improved Consular Assistance for Indian Nationals

An important responsibility of the new embassy will be providing consular assistance to Indian nationals living in or visiting Costa Rica.

The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that the mission will strengthen assistance to the Indian community and help protect the interests of Indian citizens.

A resident diplomatic mission enables Indian nationals to communicate directly with Indian diplomatic officials in Costa Rica for consular matters and assistance during emergencies.

The embassy will also facilitate closer engagement with the Indian community and support people-to-people connections between the two countries.

Indian Embassy Begins Operations in San José

The Indian Embassy commenced operations on October 10, 2026, with a camp office established in San José.

The embassy’s initial office is located at Residence Inn by Marriott Escazú, Complejo Avenida Escazú, Autopista Próspero Fernández, San José, 10203, Costa Rica.

The mission can be contacted through telephone number +506 2588-4300, extension 304, or through the official email addresses [email protected] and [email protected].

The establishment of this diplomatic presence represents a further step in developing institutional links between India and Costa Rica.

India Strengthens Its Global Diplomatic Network

India’s decision to establish a resident embassy in Costa Rica reflects its continuing efforts to expand diplomatic engagement with countries across different regions of the world.

The mission will help strengthen political dialogue, facilitate economic cooperation, support Indian citizens and encourage closer cultural and institutional relationships.

With its new embassy in San José, India has established a stronger diplomatic foundation for expanding its partnership with Costa Rica and deepening its engagement with Central America.
