India and Spain Push for Deeper Trade, Investment and Technology Partnership

The discussions reflected the changing character of India–Spain economic ties. Traditional trade remains important, while emerging sectors are creating a broader foundation for long-term cooperation.

India and Spain have moved to deepen their economic partnership as Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal began his official engagements in Madrid on July 13, 2026. The discussions placed trade, investment, advanced technology, clean energy and industrial collaboration at the centre of a relationship that is steadily acquiring greater strategic and commercial importance.

Goyal held talks with Carlos Cuerpo Caballero, First Vice President of the Government of Spain and Minister of Economy, Trade and Business. The meeting examined opportunities to expand bilateral commerce, encourage investment flows and connect companies from both countries across high-growth sectors. The two sides also exchanged views on the proposed India–European Union Free Trade Agreement and its potential to create a stronger framework for market access, investment and resilient supply chains.

Technology and Clean Energy Take Centre Stage

The discussions reflected the changing character of India–Spain economic ties. Traditional trade remains important, while emerging sectors are creating a broader foundation for long-term cooperation.

Renewable energy and green hydrogen featured prominently in the talks. Spain has developed considerable capabilities in solar power, wind energy, energy infrastructure and clean-technology deployment. India, supported by its rapidly expanding renewable-energy market and national green-hydrogen ambitions, offers Spanish companies opportunities in manufacturing, project development, storage, transmission and sustainable industrial systems.

Advanced manufacturing, digital technologies, infrastructure and innovation were also identified as priority areas. These sectors closely align with India’s plans to expand domestic production, strengthen industrial supply chains and attract technology-driven investment.

Greater collaboration could bring Spanish engineering and technology companies into India’s infrastructure and manufacturing ecosystem while enabling Indian information-technology, engineering and consulting firms to expand their presence in Spain and the wider European market.

Building Stronger Business-to-Business Links

A major objective of Goyal’s Spain visit is to transform diplomatic goodwill into direct commercial partnerships. His programme includes engagement with Spanish ministers, industry associations and corporate leaders, along with an India–Spain Business Roundtable.

The business discussions are expected to cover automobiles, railways, renewable energy, artificial intelligence, semiconductors, food processing and tourism. These sectors offer scope for joint manufacturing, research partnerships, technology transfers, investments and integration into regional and global value chains.

Spain possesses established strengths in transport infrastructure, automotive components, rail technology, clean energy, tourism management and industrial design. India brings a large domestic market, a growing manufacturing base, skilled human resources and an expanding digital economy. Connecting these complementary capabilities could produce commercially viable projects in both countries.

Several prominent Spanish companies already operate in India. These include Iberdrola, Acciona, CAF, Talgo, Gestamp and Indra, whose activities span energy, infrastructure, railway systems, automotive manufacturing, technology and defence electronics.

Indian companies including Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro, Tech Mahindra and Larsen & Toubro have also expanded their operations in Spain, supporting digitalisation, engineering services and Industry 4.0 programmes. Their growing presence illustrates how bilateral ties are moving beyond the exchange of goods towards investment, services, innovation and industrial integration.

India–EU Free Trade Agreement in Focus

The proposed India–EU Free Trade Agreement formed an important part of the discussions in Spain. A comprehensive agreement could reduce trade barriers, improve regulatory cooperation and provide businesses with greater predictability.

Spain can play an influential role in advancing India’s economic engagement with the European Union. Stronger bilateral cooperation can also help companies prepare for the commercial opportunities expected from a wider India–EU trade arrangement.

For Indian exporters, improved access to European markets could benefit engineering goods, pharmaceuticals, textiles, processed food, information technology and professional services. European companies could gain broader opportunities in India’s infrastructure, manufacturing, renewable-energy and consumer markets.

The wider objective is to create a balanced economic partnership that supports investment, innovation, employment and supply-chain security. India’s growing role as a manufacturing and technology hub makes it an increasingly important partner for European economies seeking diversified and reliable production networks.

Expanding Cooperation Across Strategic Industries

Railways represent one of the most promising areas for India–Spain collaboration. Spanish companies have experience in high-speed rail, rolling stock, signalling and transport engineering, while India is undertaking one of the world’s largest railway-modernisation programmes.

The automotive sector also offers opportunities through electric mobility, component manufacturing, smart production systems and automotive research. India’s expanding electric-vehicle market and production-linked incentive programmes could encourage Spanish companies to establish deeper manufacturing and technology partnerships.

Cooperation in artificial intelligence and semiconductors could support innovation in industrial automation, telecommunications, smart cities, mobility and public services. Indian technology companies can provide software and digital expertise, while Spanish institutions and businesses can contribute research capabilities and access to European innovation networks.

Food processing and tourism present another layer of opportunity. India’s large agricultural base and food-processing potential can complement Spain’s expertise in food technology, packaging, quality control and global marketing. Tourism cooperation can promote investment, hospitality training, destination management and stronger cultural connections.

Seventy Years of Diplomatic Relations

The visit takes place during the Spain–India Dual Year 2026, which marks 70 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The anniversary provides an opportunity to strengthen economic ties alongside cultural, educational and people-to-people exchanges.

Over seven decades, the relationship has developed from conventional diplomacy into a partnership covering commerce, infrastructure, renewable energy, defence, technology, tourism and culture. The current engagement aims to provide this relationship with a stronger economic structure supported by companies, investors and innovation institutions.

The focus on business-to-business cooperation is particularly significant. Government agreements create an enabling environment, while sustained commercial partnerships generate investments, jobs, technology exchanges and long-term economic links.

Wider European Economic Outreach

Spain is the first destination in Goyal’s five-day visit to Spain, Belgium and Finland from July 13 to 17. He is leading a high-level Indian business delegation representing advanced manufacturing, clean energy, digital technologies, healthcare, gems and jewellery, food processing and design.

The wider European programme is designed to strengthen India’s engagement with governments, businesses and technology institutions. In Belgium, the minister is scheduled to participate in India–EU trade and technology discussions and engage with companies connected to logistics, diamonds, aerospace, cybersecurity and sustainable manufacturing.

His Finland engagements are expected to focus on clean energy, telecommunications, 6G research, advanced manufacturing, industrial innovation and the circular economy.

Together, these engagements reflect India’s effort to build a broader economic partnership with Europe based on technology, sustainability, manufacturing and resilient supply chains.

A Partnership Moving Towards Practical Outcomes

The Madrid discussions signal a shared desire to move India–Spain relations towards larger investments and practical industrial cooperation. Renewable energy, green hydrogen, railways, digitalisation, artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing provide a strong foundation for this next phase.

India’s scale and growth prospects, combined with Spain’s technological and industrial capabilities, create room for a partnership that can benefit companies and workers in both countries. Progress on the India–EU Free Trade Agreement could further accelerate this process by providing a wider framework for commerce, investment and innovation.

Goyal’s Spain visit therefore represents more than a routine diplomatic engagement. It forms part of India’s broader strategy to build trusted economic partnerships, attract technology and investment, expand the international presence of Indian companies and position the country as a dependable centre for manufacturing, innovation and sustainable growth.
