India and South Korea are moving to deepen their economic and financial partnership, with the two countries preparing to revive their Finance Ministers’ Meeting while also advancing work to connect their digital payment systems.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman met South Korean Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance and Economy Koo Yun Cheol on the sidelines of the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors Meeting in Asheville, North Carolina. The G20 meeting was held from August 31 to September 1, 2026. South Korea’s Ministry of Finance and Economy confirmed that Koo held bilateral talks with Sitharaman during the gathering.
A major outcome of the meeting was renewed momentum behind the Korea-India Finance Ministers’ Meeting, which has not been held since June 2017. Koo proposed convening the next meeting in South Korea during the second half of 2026, and the Indian side welcomed the proposal. Both sides want the revived dialogue to cover areas including artificial intelligence, digital technologies, resilient supply chains and infrastructure.
The discussions build directly on commitments made during South Korean President Lee Jae Myung’s state visit to India in April 2026. In the Joint Strategic Vision adopted during that visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Lee agreed that the India-ROK Finance Ministers’ Meeting should be held during 2026 as part of a broader effort to intensify ministerial-level engagement.
Another important area is cross-border digital payments. India and South Korea are working toward interoperability between their QR-based payment systems, which could eventually make payments easier for travellers and businesses in both countries. India’s official Akashvani News reported that Sitharaman and Koo discussed the continuing work toward such interoperability during their Asheville meeting.
The foundation for this payment linkage was established during President Lee’s April visit. India and South Korea formally welcomed an MoU between NPCI International Payments Limited and the Korea Financial Telecommunications & Clearings Institute, under which the two sides are pursuing phased integration of their digital payment systems. The stated objective is to improve interoperability while strengthening economic and people-to-people ties.
The financial dialogue is also part of a much wider economic-security partnership. India and South Korea have agreed to strengthen supply chains involving strategic resources, critical minerals and rare earths, while expanding cooperation in sectors such as semiconductors, telecom equipment, secondary batteries, shipbuilding and advanced technologies. Their April strategic vision also called for deeper cooperation across the critical-minerals value chain, including exploration, processing, recycling and recovery from unconventional sources.
Investment is another important pillar. The two governments have committed to creating a more favourable environment for Korean and Indian companies to invest in each other’s markets, while expanding cooperation across infrastructure, manufacturing, financial services and emerging industries.
The latest meeting therefore represents more than a routine G20 bilateral. By reviving a dedicated finance-minister-level mechanism and pushing ahead with digital-payment interoperability, India and South Korea are creating institutional links that could translate their broader strategic partnership into more direct financial, technological and commercial connectivity.
