The Centre is procuring key materials for its flagship schemes, including laptops, computers, smartphones and printers, online to save time and costs. Surprisingly, it is ordering not from big e-commerce companies like Flipkart and Amazon but its own Government e Marketplace (GeM).

GeM Crosses ₹18.4 Lakh Crore In Cumulative Procurement, Tops ₹5 Lakh Crore In Fy26

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said the milestone reflects GeM’s expanding role as a transparent, technology-driven and inclusive procurement platform that connects government buyers with enterprises across India while improving efficiency and accountability in public spending. GeM CEO Mihir Kumar said the achievement signals growing confidence among buyers, sellers and institutions in the platform’s digital procurement ecosystem.

India’s Government e Marketplace (GeM) has crossed a cumulative Gross Merchandise Value of ₹18.4 lakh crore, with procurement through the digital platform alone exceeding ₹5 lakh crore in the financial year 2025–26, underlining its rapid rise as a major pillar of public procurement in the country.

A major share of this expansion has come from smaller businesses. During FY 2025–26, Micro and Small Enterprises executed 68 per cent of total orders on GeM and accounted for 47.1 per cent of the platform’s total GMV. More than 11 lakh MSEs are now registered on the portal, and together they received over 51 lakh orders worth ₹2.36 lakh crore during the year, marking growth of more than 20 per cent over the previous financial year.

The platform has also recorded strong gains in procurement from women-led businesses, SC/ST enterprises and startups. According to the PIB release, over 2.1 lakh women-led MSEs registered on GeM secured orders worth more than ₹28,000 crore in FY26, reflecting about 28 per cent growth. SC/ST MSEs received orders worth over ₹6,000 crore, also up by around 28 per cent, while startups won orders exceeding ₹19,000 crore, registering growth of more than 36 per cent.

Technology remains central to the platform’s functioning. GeM said it is using artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced analytics to strengthen transparency and efficiency, with tools such as ML-based catalogue validation, pre-sanity checks and real-time transaction monitoring helping reduce errors and flag irregularities. The platform also uses analytical systems to detect abnormal pricing, suspected collusive bidding patterns, technical rejection anomalies and possible buyer-seller collusion. Features such as Bid Health Scores are intended to support better decision-making and improve trust in the procurement process.

GeM’s footprint is also widening beyond Central Ministries, Departments and Central Public Sector Enterprises. Procurement by States and Union Territories grew by 38.3 per cent during FY 2025–26, indicating increasing adoption of the platform at the state level as governments look for more transparent and accountable procurement systems.
