Final location survey begins for proposed Gangtok–Nathu La rail link

Indian Railways has begun the final location survey for a proposed new railway line between Gangtok and Nathu La, marking the next step in a wider plan to extend rail connectivity deeper into Sikkim and towards the strategically important border region. The development comes after the survey for the Rangpo–Gangtok stretch was completed, while the existing Sivok–Rangpo rail project continues to advance.

According to the Times of India report, railway officials have said the Gangtok–Nathu La line has now entered the survey stage, with construction on that stretch expected to begin in about two years if approvals move forward. The report also said the Rangpo–Gangtok survey had already been completed earlier, creating a sequential roadmap for extending rail access from the plains into Sikkim’s capital and then onward to Nathu La.

Officially, a March 11, 2026 Lok Sabha reply states that the survey for the Rangpo–Gangtok new line has been completed and that preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) is underway. The same reply notes that, after DPR preparation, project sanction would still require consultations with stakeholders and approvals from bodies including NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Finance, meaning timelines for actual sanction cannot yet be fixed.

The new survey is linked to the larger Sivok–Rangpo railway project, which will provide Sikkim’s first connection to the national railway network. PIB has said the 44.96-km Sivok–Rangpo line is under progress and is targeted for completion by December 2027. A February 2026 PIB release also said around 90% of the project work was complete at that stage, though the latest operational date quoted in the Times of India report is more optimistic for partial functionality.

The Sivok–Rangpo line is one of the most challenging rail projects in the Northeast. PIB has said the alignment includes 14 tunnels and 13 major bridges, with about 86% of the route passing through tunnels. The proposed line has five stationsSivok, Riyang, Teesta Bazar, Melli and Rangpo—and the longest tunnel on the route is about 5.30 km.

The strategic significance of the broader expansion is considerable. Nathu La, located on the India–China frontier in eastern Sikkim, is both a sensitive border point and an important tourism and logistics corridor. If the project progresses beyond survey and sanction stages, rail access toward Gangtok and eventually Nathu La could improve civilian mobility, tourism access and long-term logistical connectivity in one of India’s most difficult mountain terrains. This strategic importance is also reflected in official messaging around the Sivok–Rangpo line, which PIB has described as significant for both regional development and wider connectivity in the Northeast.
