Starting July, the National Capital will get its second airport in the Delhi, NCR area. As per a report in PTI, commercial flights are likely to start operations from the Hindon airport by the end of June as the Ministry of Defence has given all requisite approvals, said a senior official of the Airports Authority of India (AAI). “The Ministry of Defence has approved the proposal of Ghodawat Enterprises for operation of RCS (regional air connectivity scheme) flights from Hindon airport….These RCS flights are likely to commence by end of June this year,” PTI quoted the AAI official as saying.
Reducing the load at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, Hindon will serve as the ‘second’ airport. The airforce station is located close to Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
Hindon airport, which is around 40 kms from the IGI Airport in Delhi, belongs to the Indian Air Force (IAF) and the AAI has developed the civil enclave there. The Indian Air Force permitted use of the airbase for civilian flights under regional air connectivity scheme UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik). UDAN seeks to connect unserved and underserved airports as well as make flying more affordable. On 8 March 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the new civil enclave at Hindon airport from where commercial flights would be operated. The civil enclave, which cost around ₹40 crore, can handle 300 passengers during peak hours.
The Hindon airport is a single-runway base and home to Boeing C-17 Globemaster aircraft that form the backbone of the heavy airlift division of the Indian Air Force.
Another airport —Jewar in Greater Noida— in the National Capital Region, along the 165-km Yamuna Expressway, is expected to be operational by 2022-23, as per a report in Hindustan Times. It will take the load off Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport once completed.
The Delhi airport is in the process of expanding the capacity of existing terminals and building a new runway by 2021
