Andhra Pradesh is positioning itself as a future leader in India’s gold mining sector, backed by substantial gold reserves discovered in the state’s Kurnool district. State officials believe ongoing exploration and mining activities could transform Andhra Pradesh into the country’s largest gold-producing region in the coming years.
According to senior mining officials, Jonnagiri village in Kurnool district has emerged as one of the most promising gold-bearing zones in the state. Preliminary assessments indicate that the area could contain around 50 tonnes of gold, making it one of the most significant gold deposits identified in India in recent years.
Mukesh Kumar Meena, Principal Secretary for Mines, said the state has identified four key locations with strong potential for gold extraction. These include Jonnagiri, Ramagiri, Javvakula and Chigurukunta-Bisnatam, all of which are expected to contribute to the state’s long-term mining strategy.
Commercial gold production has already commenced at Jonnagiri, where approximately 1,500 acres were allocated for mining operations nearly a decade ago. Exploration activities have covered a significant portion of the allotted area, while surveys and assessments in the remaining land are expected to continue in the coming phase.
Officials noted that the state’s growing focus on mineral development, combined with ongoing exploration efforts, could significantly increase domestic gold production and reduce dependence on imports. The development is also expected to generate employment opportunities, attract investment and support economic growth in the region.
With large-scale reserves under evaluation and production already underway, Andhra Pradesh is steadily emerging as a key player in India’s mineral resource sector, with Jonnagiri at the centre of its gold mining ambitions.
