India’s organised retail sector recorded 10 per cent year-on-year sales growth in August 2026, extending the recovery that began during the middle of the year and providing retailers with stronger momentum as the festive shopping period approaches.
The latest Retailers Association of India Business Survey shows that sales growth has steadily accelerated after weakening in May. Retail growth stood at 7 per cent in April, fell to 5 per cent in May, recovered to 6 per cent in June and 8 per cent in July before reaching 10 per cent in August.
Retail Growth Accelerates for Third Consecutive Month
The August performance marks the strongest growth recorded in the recent monthly sequence covered by the survey. After the slowdown seen in May, retail sales have now strengthened for three consecutive months.
The improvement suggests that consumer spending remained resilient across several major categories rather than being concentrated in a single segment. The timing is particularly important for retailers because August marks the beginning of the build-up towards India’s major festive shopping period, when demand typically increases across food, fashion, electronics and other consumer categories.
Kumar Rajagopalan, Executive Director and CEO of the Retailers Association of India, said the rebound since July had been encouraging and that the August performance provided a positive lead into the festive season. Retailers are now focusing on execution and inventory planning as seasonal demand increases.
West India Leads Regional Retail Growth
Retail sales expanded across all four major regions during August, although the pace varied moderately.
West India recorded the strongest year-on-year growth at 11 per cent, followed by South India at 10 per cent. North India registered 9 per cent growth, while East India recorded an 8 per cent increase.
The relatively narrow difference between the regions indicates that the recovery was geographically broad rather than being driven by a single part of the country.
Quick-Service Restaurants Record 15% Growth
Quick-service restaurants emerged as the fastest-growing retail category during August, registering a 15 per cent year-on-year increase in sales.
The strong performance of QSRs points to sustained consumer spending on eating out and convenient food formats. The category has become an increasingly important component of India’s organised retail and food-service markets, supported by expanding restaurant networks, shopping centres, delivery platforms and changing consumption patterns.
Food and grocery was the second-fastest-growing category, with sales rising 12 per cent compared with August 2025.
Apparel Sales Rise 10%
Apparel and clothing sales grew 10 per cent year-on-year during August, matching the overall national retail growth rate.
The performance comes at an important time for fashion retailers, which typically begin building inventories ahead of the festive and wedding seasons. Demand during the coming months will therefore be closely watched as retailers assess whether the stronger momentum recorded in July and August carries into the peak shopping period.
Footwear sales increased by 8 per cent, indicating continued growth across another major discretionary retail segment.
Electronics and Consumer Durables Grow 7%
Consumer durables and electronics registered 7 per cent year-on-year growth during August.
Although growth in the category was lower than in QSRs, food and grocery or apparel, the increase indicates continued consumer spending on products such as appliances, electronics and other durable goods.
Demand in this segment often strengthens during festive periods as brands and retailers introduce promotional offers, financing schemes and new product launches.
Essential and Discretionary Categories Both Expand
One of the notable features of the August survey is the simultaneous growth of routine consumption categories and discretionary segments.
Food and grocery recorded double-digit growth, while restaurants, apparel, footwear and electronics also expanded. This broader pattern provides a more comprehensive picture of retail demand than growth concentrated solely in essential purchases.
The improvement follows several months of relatively moderate retail growth and suggests that consumer activity strengthened progressively as the second half of 2026 approached.
Retailers Prepare for the Festive Demand Cycle
India’s festive period is one of the most important trading seasons for the retail industry, influencing purchasing across clothing, footwear, jewellery, consumer electronics, food products and other categories.
The acceleration from 5 per cent growth in May to 10 per cent in August gives retailers stronger momentum heading into this period. Businesses are consequently placing greater emphasis on inventory management, supply-chain readiness, store operations and product availability.
The ability to accurately anticipate demand becomes particularly important during periods when consumer purchases can increase sharply over a relatively short period.
Retail Sector Remains Cautious About Global Conditions
Despite improving domestic sales, the Retailers Association of India has maintained a measured outlook because of uncertainty in the wider global economic environment.
Strong domestic consumption can provide Indian retailers with a degree of resilience, but global factors can still influence input costs, supply chains, imported products, financing conditions and consumer sentiment.
The August numbers therefore show a strengthening domestic retail market while also highlighting the importance of watching whether the momentum can be sustained through the coming festive months.
From a May Slowdown to an August Rebound
The monthly progression provides one of the clearest indications of the change taking place in India’s retail sector. Sales growth moved from 7 per cent in April to 5 per cent in May before beginning a steady recovery to 6 per cent in June, 8 per cent in July and 10 per cent in August.
Quick-service restaurants and food and grocery currently lead that recovery, while apparel, footwear and consumer durables are also contributing to the expansion.
The next few months will provide a clearer indication of whether this improvement represents the beginning of a stronger consumer spending cycle or primarily reflects the seasonal build-up to India’s festive shopping period.
