India’s Pacific Outreach Expands as 20 Customised Motorcycles Are Handed Over to Palau Police

India has handed over 20 specially customised, Made-in-India motorcycles to the Republic of Palau for use by its police force this September, adding another practical element to New Delhi’s expanding development partnership with Pacific Island countries.

The motorcycles were presented in Koror by Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita to Jennifer S. Olegeriil, Palau’s Minister of Justice, during his visit to the island nation for the 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting.

Margherita said the motorcycles represented a small but meaningful expression of India’s friendship with Palau and its support for the country as it hosted the regional summit. The motorcycles have been customised specifically for police use and will strengthen mobility available to Palau’s law-enforcement personnel.

The handover is notable because Palau’s Ministry of Justice is responsible for the country’s public-safety and law-enforcement system. Its responsibilities extend across the national police force, emergency response, criminal investigations, maritime security and other public-order functions.

For a geographically dispersed Pacific island country, mobile policing equipment can have a direct operational value, particularly for patrol duties, rapid response and movement through areas where larger vehicles may be less practical.

The motorcycles also carry a wider significance for India’s engagement with the Pacific.

India has steadily expanded its cooperation with Pacific Island countries through the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation, or FIPIC, alongside bilateral development projects in areas such as health, renewable energy, infrastructure, capacity building and disaster resilience.

During his visit to Palau, Margherita also participated in the Dialogue Partner Session of the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting, where he outlined India’s support for a free, open, peaceful and prosperous Indo-Pacific and highlighted New Delhi’s growing development partnership with the Pacific.

India increasingly describes Pacific Island countries not simply in terms of their land area but as large ocean states, reflecting the importance of their extensive maritime zones and their role in the wider Indo-Pacific.

The handover of the motorcycles fits within India’s preference for relatively focused development projects that respond to specific requirements identified by partner countries.

India has previously supported Palau through medical assistance, health projects, infrastructure support and other development initiatives. The addition of Made-in-India police motorcycles broadens that cooperation into public-safety mobility.

The handover also gives an Indian-manufactured product a visible role in one of the Pacific’s small but strategically important island states.

While modest in scale, the project reflects the practical side of India’s Pacific engagement: supplying equipment that can be put directly into service while strengthening bilateral ties through targeted development assistance.

For Palau Police, the immediate result is straightforward — 20 additional customised motorcycles available for policing duties. For India, the project provides another tangible expression of its growing relationship with the Pacific Island region.
