More than 6.5 crore Income-Tax Returns (ITRs) have been filed for Assessment Year 2026-27, reflecting continued growth in tax compliance and digital filing across India, according to the Income Tax Department.
The latest figure represents a substantial increase from the 5.9 crore returns that had been filed by July 31, 2026. The department had thanked taxpayers for timely compliance at that stage, saying that voluntary participation contributes to India’s economic growth.
Of the returns filed so far, more than two crore are ITR-3 and ITR-4 forms, according to the department. ITR-3 is generally used by individuals and Hindu Undivided Families earning income from business or profession, while ITR-4 is available to eligible taxpayers using the presumptive taxation scheme.
The Income Tax Department has urged taxpayers who are yet to complete their filings to avoid waiting until the final days. The current deadline for filing ITR-3, ITR-4, ITR-5 and ITR-7 is August 31, 2026, according to the latest official update reported by News on AIR.
The rising number of returns also reflects the growing digitisation of India’s direct-tax administration. Online filing, pre-filled information, digital verification and greater integration of financial data have progressively shifted income-tax compliance away from paper-based processes.
The filing milestone comes alongside strong direct-tax collections in the current financial year. Up to August 10, net direct-tax collections for FY2026-27 had crossed ₹8.11 lakh crore, representing growth of more than 23% over the corresponding period of the previous year. Gross collections had exceeded ₹9.54 lakh crore, while refunds of more than ₹1.43 lakh crore had been issued.
With more than 6.5 crore returns already submitted and further filings expected before the August 31 deadline, the latest numbers underline the continuing expansion of India’s formal tax base and the increasing role of digital systems in tax administration.
