Indian Railways Freight Loading Rises 9% to 141.3 Million Tonnes in July 2026

The increase was supported by higher transportation of iron ore, coal, fertilizers and food grains, reflecting sustained demand from India’s industrial, agricultural, infrastructure and power sectors.

Indian Railways recorded strong growth in freight movement during July 2026, transporting 141.3 million tonnes of goods during the month. This was 9 per cent higher than the 129.7 million tonnes carried in July 2025.

The increase was supported by higher transportation of iron ore, coal, fertilizers and food grains, reflecting sustained demand from India’s industrial, agricultural, infrastructure and power sectors.

Passenger traffic also increased during the month, while higher freight movement generated additional revenue for the national transporter.

Freight Loading Crosses 141 Million Tonnes

Indian Railways loaded 141.3 million tonnes of freight in July 2026, an increase of 11.6 million tonnes compared with the corresponding month of the previous year.

The 9 per cent year-on-year growth highlights the importance of the railway network in moving bulk commodities over long distances and supporting major sectors of the economy.

Rail freight remains particularly important for products such as coal, minerals, fertilizers and food grains, which must be transported in large quantities between production centres, ports, warehouses, industrial facilities and consumer markets.

The performance also reflects continuing efforts to improve wagon availability, freight-terminal operations, network capacity and the overall efficiency of goods movement.

Iron Ore Loading Records 22.2% Growth

Iron ore emerged as one of the fastest-growing major freight categories during July, with loading increasing by 22.2 per cent over July 2025.

Iron ore is a critical input for steel production. Higher railway movement of the mineral may therefore support rising activity across steel plants, mineral-processing facilities and infrastructure-linked industries.

The railway network connects several of India’s major mining regions with steel-producing centres and ports. Efficient movement of iron ore helps reduce transportation bottlenecks and ensures a more dependable supply of raw material to industry.

Growth in this category also contributes significantly to freight revenue because mineral traffic is generally transported in large volumes.

Coal Transportation Increases 11.5%

Coal loading rose by 11.5 per cent during July 2026 compared with the same month of the previous year.

Coal continues to account for a substantial share of Indian Railways’ freight traffic because of its importance to thermal power generation and several energy-intensive industries.

The railway system plays a central role in moving coal from mines and loading points to power stations across the country. Reliable transportation is essential for maintaining adequate fuel stocks and supporting uninterrupted electricity generation.

Higher coal movement during July reflected increased demand from thermal power plants as well as the Railways’ efforts to improve the availability and circulation of coal-carrying rakes.

Domestic Coal Supply to Power Plants Rises 20%

Indian Railways increased domestic coal supplies to thermal power plants by 20 per cent during July 2026 compared with July 2025.

The increase came amid higher coal demand from the electricity sector.

Timely delivery of domestic coal helps power plants maintain adequate inventories and reduces the risk of generation constraints caused by fuel shortages.

Closer coordination among Indian Railways, coal-producing companies and power-generation utilities is essential for matching rake availability with the requirements of individual plants.

The 20 per cent rise in domestic supply underlines the railway network’s strategic role in India’s energy security.

Fertilizer Loading Grows 12%

Fertilizer transportation increased by 12 per cent during the month.

The movement of fertilizers is closely linked to seasonal agricultural demand. Large quantities must be transported from manufacturing units and ports to distribution centres across different states before and during major sowing periods.

Railways provide an efficient means of moving these products over long distances and in bulk quantities.

Higher loading can improve fertilizer availability in agricultural regions and support timely distribution to farmers.

Efficient coordination between fertilizer companies, government departments, state agencies and railway authorities is particularly important during peak agricultural seasons.

Food-Grain Movement Increases 11.5%

Food-grain loading also recorded year-on-year growth of 11.5 per cent in July 2026.

Indian Railways plays a major role in transporting wheat, rice and other food grains from producing states to storage facilities and consumption centres.

The network is also essential for the movement of grains procured under government programmes and distributed through the public food-management system.

Higher food-grain loading supports national food security by enabling stocks to be moved between surplus and deficit regions.

Rail transport is especially suitable for such operations because it can handle large consignments at comparatively lower logistical cost.

Other Goods Register Strong Growth

The category classified as Balance Other Goods recorded an increase of 12.1 per cent during July.

This category includes a diverse range of commodities outside the major bulk-freight groups.

Its growth indicates that railway freight demand is expanding beyond traditional cargo such as coal and minerals.

Diversification is important for Indian Railways as it seeks to attract a wider variety of customers and capture a greater share of India’s logistics market.

Improvements in terminals, container services, parcel operations and customer-specific freight products can help the Railways serve manufacturers, traders and logistics companies more effectively.

Freight Revenue Rises 8%

The increase in goods movement generated ₹1,137 crore in additional freight revenue compared with July 2025.

This represented revenue growth of approximately 8 per cent.

Higher freight earnings strengthen the Railways’ ability to invest in track expansion, signalling, terminals, rolling stock and other infrastructure.

Freight revenue also plays an important role in supporting the broader financial operations of the national railway system.

While freight loading increased by 9 per cent, revenue rose by 8 per cent. Differences between volume and revenue growth may be influenced by the mix of commodities transported, distances covered and applicable freight rates.

Several Railway Zones Report Higher Revenue

East Central Railway and Eastern Railway each recorded freight-revenue growth of 33 per cent during July 2026.

West Central Railway registered an increase of 23 per cent, while South Eastern Railway recorded growth of 10.33 per cent.

These zones serve several important coal, mineral, industrial and manufacturing regions.

Their strong performance was likely supported by increased loading of bulk commodities and improved movement across major freight corridors.

Zonal results can vary according to regional industrial activity, availability of commodities, port traffic, power-sector demand and infrastructure capacity.

Passenger Traffic Reaches 63.35 Crore

Indian Railways carried 63.35 crore passengers during July 2026, compared with 62.19 crore in July 2025.

This represented an increase of approximately 1.16 crore passengers.

Growth was recorded across suburban and non-suburban services, indicating continued demand for both daily commuting and longer-distance travel.

Suburban rail systems remain essential to the functioning of major metropolitan regions, carrying large numbers of workers and students every day.

Non-suburban trains connect cities, towns and rural areas and provide affordable long-distance mobility for millions of passengers.

Railways Supports Economic and Social Connectivity

The simultaneous growth of freight and passenger traffic demonstrates the dual role performed by Indian Railways.

On the freight side, it supports mining, steel production, electricity generation, agriculture, food distribution and manufacturing.

On the passenger side, it provides mass mobility across urban, regional and inter-state routes.

The movement of 141.3 million tonnes of freight in a single month illustrates the scale of the network’s contribution to India’s logistics system.

Rail transport can also help reduce road congestion and improve energy efficiency when bulk cargo is shifted from trucks to trains.

Infrastructure Expansion Remains Essential

Sustaining freight growth will require continued investment in track capacity, terminals, wagons, locomotives and signalling systems.

Dedicated Freight Corridors and other capacity-enhancement projects can allow goods trains to move faster and more reliably while reducing pressure on routes shared with passenger services.

Modern freight terminals, improved first- and last-mile connectivity and digital cargo-management systems can make railway transport more attractive to private businesses.

Faster wagon turnaround and predictable delivery schedules will also be important for competing with road-based logistics.

For passenger services, growing demand will require additional capacity, better station facilities and continued attention to safety and punctuality.

Strong July Performance Reflects Wider Economic Demand

The July 2026 results indicate strong demand for the transportation of raw materials, agricultural inputs, food supplies and energy commodities.

Growth in iron ore and coal movement points to continuing activity in the industrial and power sectors, while higher fertilizer and food-grain loading reflects the Railways’ importance to agriculture and food security.

The increase in passenger numbers further demonstrates the continued dependence of millions of Indians on rail services for affordable and reliable mobility.

Indian Railways’ ability to sustain this momentum will depend on operational efficiency, timely infrastructure expansion and closer coordination with industries, ports, power plants and state governments.

With freight loading rising by 9 per cent and passenger traffic also moving upward, the national transporter continues to serve as a critical link between India’s production centres, markets and communities.
