India has strengthened its position as the world’s leading destination for retail and FMCG global capability centres, reflecting the country’s growing importance in the international business services ecosystem. According to a TeamLease Digital report, India is now home to 180 retail and FMCG GCCs, employing nearly 2,72,300 professionals across technology, analytics, supply chain, customer experience, finance, operations and artificial intelligence-led business functions.
This makes India the largest retail GCC hub globally. The report states that India’s retail GCC ecosystem is 34 percent larger than the combined retail GCC markets of Poland, the Philippines, Mexico, Germany and Egypt. The scale highlights how global retailers increasingly view India as a strategic centre for innovation, digital transformation and enterprise operations.
Retail and FMCG companies are expanding their India-based capability centres to support global business priorities. These centres are no longer limited to back-office functions. Many of them now handle advanced work in artificial intelligence, data science, cloud platforms, cybersecurity, e-commerce technology, digital payments, loyalty programmes, consumer analytics and supply chain optimisation.
Hiring momentum has also increased sharply. Demand across retail GCCs almost doubled between 2024 and 2025, creating more than 52,000 job opportunities in a single year. This growth reflects the rising need for skilled professionals who can support global retailers in building digital-first, data-driven and automation-enabled business models.
India also leads major peer markets in artificial intelligence adoption within retail GCCs. The report estimates AI penetration at around 5 to 7 percent of the retail GCC workforce in India, placing the country ahead of other tracked markets, including Germany. This indicates that Indian GCCs are moving deeper into high-value technology functions rather than remaining focused only on routine support roles.
A key factor behind this growth is India’s strong talent base. The country offers a large pool of engineers, data specialists, product managers, finance professionals, digital commerce experts and business analysts. Global retail companies are also attracted by India’s mature technology ecosystem, expanding start-up network, strong English-speaking workforce and experience in managing large-scale digital operations.
The trend is broadening beyond American retailers. European companies are increasing their India presence, while retailers from Japan and South Korea are also showing stronger interest. This reflects India’s rising credibility as a global business transformation hub for both Western and Asian enterprises.
For India, the expansion of retail GCCs has wider economic significance. It creates high-quality urban employment, supports technology-led services exports, builds leadership talent and deepens India’s role in global value chains. As global retailers invest more in automation, artificial intelligence and omnichannel commerce, India is likely to become even more central to their long-term growth strategies.
The rise of India as the world’s largest retail GCC hub marks a major shift in the country’s services economy. From being a cost-efficient support destination, India has evolved into a global command centre for retail innovation, digital operations and business intelligence.
