India’s traditional craft economy is receiving a major digital push through Indiahandmade, a dedicated online marketplace created by the Digital India Corporation under the Ministry of Textiles. The platform is designed to connect artisans, weavers and craft producers directly with buyers, giving India’s handmade sector a wider market, better visibility and stronger income opportunities.
Launched in 2023, Indiahandmade has become an important bridge between India’s craft heritage and the modern digital economy. The platform showcases a wide range of handmade products, including handloom textiles, handicrafts, home décor, jewellery, paintings, furnishings, footwear, bags, furniture and musical instruments. It also gives special visibility to Geographical Indication-tagged products and One District One Product items, helping regional crafts reach customers beyond their traditional local markets.
India has one of the world’s richest handmade traditions, supported by an estimated 64.66 lakh handloom and handicraft artisans. Women form the backbone of this sector, accounting for 71 percent of handloom weavers and 64 percent of the total artisan workforce as of August 2025. By helping these artisans access online markets, Indiahandmade supports both cultural preservation and livelihood generation.
The platform is especially important because many artisans still depend on middlemen, local exhibitions or seasonal sales. Indiahandmade reduces this dependence by giving sellers a direct digital storefront. This allows artisans to display their products, reach buyers across India, receive digital payments and build their own identity in the marketplace. For small producers, such access can make a major difference in income stability and business growth.
Indiahandmade has also made onboarding easier for artisans and weavers. Sellers without GST registration can join the platform using an Enrolment ID for intra-state sales. This simple process encourages small artisans, first-time entrepreneurs, producer groups and rural craft clusters to participate in e-commerce without facing heavy compliance barriers at the entry stage.
For buyers, the platform offers an authentic destination for handmade Indian products. It provides secure payments, purchase protection and free shipping, making the buying process safer and more convenient. This helps customers purchase directly from genuine craft producers while supporting India’s traditional artisan communities.
The marketplace features some of India’s most celebrated craft traditions. Products such as Banarasi silk, Chanderi silk, Tussar silk, Ikat, Tangail sarees, Aipan art, Pashmina shawls and Dokra craft reflect the diversity of India’s handmade heritage. Each product carries the story of a region, a community and a skill passed down through generations.
Success stories from sellers such as Santarms, Dastkar Craft and Villages Craft show how digital commerce is opening new possibilities for traditional artisans. These examples highlight how online access can help craft producers expand their customer base, improve sales and preserve their skills in a changing economy.
Indiahandmade also supports the larger goals of Digital India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. It brings rural producers into the digital economy, promotes self-reliance among artisans, strengthens women-led livelihoods and creates new opportunities for small craft entrepreneurs. With a target of onboarding more than 60 lakh artisans, the platform has the potential to become one of India’s most important digital craft ecosystems.
The expansion of Indiahandmade marks a meaningful step in protecting India’s craft identity while preparing it for the future. By combining tradition with technology, the platform gives artisans a stronger voice, buyers a trusted marketplace and India’s handmade sector a wider national and global stage.
