Indian Railways Records Strong Freight and Passenger Growth in June 2026

During June 2026, Indian Railways loaded 142.21 million tonnes of freight, compared to 136.71 million tonnes in June 2025. This marks a 4 per cent increase over the corresponding month last year. Freight earnings also recorded positive growth, generating additional revenue of nearly ₹430 crore, reflecting a 3 per cent rise over June 2025.

Indian Railways continued to demonstrate strong operational momentum in June 2026, registering healthy growth in freight loading and steady expansion in passenger traffic. The performance reinforces the role of Indian Railways as one of India’s most important growth engines, supporting industrial activity, agricultural supply chains, power generation and affordable mass mobility across the country.

The growth was driven by strong movement across several key commodity segments. Fertilizer loading rose by 19.1 per cent, highlighting the railway network’s crucial role in supporting the agricultural sector during the cropping cycle. Balance Other Goods grew by 17.3 per cent, indicating wider industrial and commercial movement. Iron ore loading increased by 9.4 per cent, while clinker registered a growth of 7.2 per cent. Domestic coal loading grew by 4.9 per cent, and total coal movement rose by 3.6 per cent.

A major highlight of June 2026 was the increased supply of coal to thermal power plants. Indian Railways supplied 7 per cent more domestic coal to power plants compared with June 2025. This additional movement helped meet higher electricity demand during the extended summer season and supported uninterrupted power generation across the country.

The strong monthly performance also added to the positive freight trend seen during the first quarter of FY 2026–27. From April to June 2026, Indian Railways loaded 419.08 million tonnes of freight, compared to 413.05 million tonnes during the same quarter of FY 2025–26. This shows that the national transporter has maintained steady freight momentum at the beginning of the financial year.

Several commodity categories performed well during the quarter. Iron ore loading increased by 7.44 per cent, clinker by 6.54 per cent and Balance and Other Goods by 12.16 per cent compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. These figures indicate continued demand from infrastructure, manufacturing, construction and other core sectors of the economy.

Passenger traffic also recorded steady growth in June 2026. Indian Railways carried 63.81 crore passengers during the month, compared to 62.37 crore passengers in June 2025. This rise reflects the continued dependence of millions of Indians on the railway network for safe, reliable and affordable travel.

The Non-Suburban passenger segment, which includes short-distance and long-distance travel, grew by 3.9 per cent. Passenger numbers in this category increased from 28.90 crore in June 2025 to 30.04 crore in June 2026. The Suburban segment also recorded positive growth of 0.9 per cent, rising from 33.46 crore to 33.77 crore passengers.

Indian Railways has also continued to expand modern passenger services. The number of Vande Bharat services has now reached 164, including the recently introduced Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Howrah and Kamakhya. These trains represent the next phase of semi-high-speed, modern and comfortable rail travel in India.

Alongside Vande Bharat, the Amrit Bharat train network has also grown steadily. The number of Amrit Bharat services has reached 72, with four new services inaugurated during June 2026. These trains are aimed at strengthening affordable long-distance connectivity while offering improved passenger comfort and modern facilities.

The June 2026 performance shows Indian Railways’ growing strength in both freight and passenger operations. On the freight side, it continues to serve as a backbone for coal, iron ore, fertilizers, cement-linked commodities and general goods. On the passenger side, it remains India’s most inclusive transport system, connecting cities, towns and rural regions at scale.

The continued expansion of freight capacity, modern trains, improved operations and passenger-focused services reflects a broader transformation within Indian Railways. As India’s economy expands, the railway network is playing a central role in reducing logistics pressure, supporting energy security, strengthening industrial supply chains and improving public mobility.

With 142 million tonnes of freight loaded in June 2026, more than 419 million tonnes moved in the first quarter and nearly 64 crore passengers served in a single month, Indian Railways has once again demonstrated its importance to national growth. Its performance in June 2026 stands as a strong indicator of operational resilience, economic relevance and continued modernisation.
