WhatsApp Launches Bill Payments in India Through Bharat Connect Network

The service is powered by Bharat Connect, the interoperable bill-payment network formerly known as the Bharat Bill Payment System, and provides access to more than 22,700 billers across 30 categories. Supported payments include electricity, water, gas, FASTag, insurance premiums, credit-card dues and loan repayments.

WhatsApp has expanded its payments offering in India with the launch of in-app bill payments, allowing users to pay household, utility and financial-service bills directly from the messaging platform.

The rollout extends WhatsApp’s role in India’s digital-payment ecosystem beyond peer-to-peer and merchant transactions into recurring household and financial payments.

Bill Payments Integrated Directly Into WhatsApp

Users can access the new feature through the ₹ icon on the WhatsApp home screen.

From there, they can select a bill category and service provider, enter the relevant consumer or account details and retrieve the outstanding bill. Once the amount and account information are verified, payment can be completed using UPI, debit cards or credit cards.

WhatsApp also allows users to view previous transactions, check upcoming bills and manage more than one account associated with the same service provider.

This can be useful for households managing multiple electricity, water or other utility connections from a single interface.

More Than 22,700 Billers Across 30 Categories

The scale of the service is enabled by WhatsApp’s integration with Bharat Connect.

Rather than establishing individual connections with thousands of utilities, insurers, lenders and other service providers, WhatsApp can access billers through the common Bharat Connect infrastructure.

The network covers 22,722 billers across 30 categories, giving users access to a broad range of recurring payments from the initial rollout itself.

Electricity, gas and water remain among the most commonly used bill-payment categories, while the inclusion of FASTag, insurance, credit cards and loan repayments extends the service into transport and financial obligations.

How to Pay a Bill on WhatsApp

The process begins by opening WhatsApp and tapping the ₹ icon. Users then choose the relevant bill category and select their provider.

After entering and confirming the required account details, the platform fetches the bill amount and associated information.

The user can review the bill before selecting UPI, debit card or credit card as the payment method and authorising the transaction.

Once the payment is completed, the transaction is recorded within the bill-payment section for future reference.

Bharat Connect Forms the Backbone

The new feature also demonstrates the growing importance of Bharat Connect as India’s common bill-payment infrastructure.

The system enables participating applications, banks and fintech platforms to connect with a large network of registered billers through a standardised framework.

For consumers, this creates greater flexibility because the same biller can potentially be accessed through several different digital platforms without requiring a separate payment arrangement for each one.

For WhatsApp, the integration allows a large bill-payment network to be incorporated into an application already used extensively for communication and business interaction.

WhatsApp Pushes Deeper Into Everyday Digital Services

WhatsApp has gradually expanded beyond messaging in India by introducing payments, business interaction and access to selected commercial and public services.

The latest rollout places recurring household payments within the same platform.

Meta India Managing Director and Country Head Arun Srinivas said WhatsApp is already used by millions of Indians to communicate with businesses and access services ranging from transport tickets to insurance. The company now wants to extend that model to routine bill payments.

The strategy is particularly significant because bill payments are recurring transactions rather than occasional purchases. Successfully integrating them could increase the frequency with which users engage with WhatsApp’s payments ecosystem.

Large User Base Gives WhatsApp a Distribution Advantage

India already has a highly competitive digital-payment market, with banks and payment applications offering extensive bill-payment services.

WhatsApp’s advantage lies in distribution.

Users do not need to install or learn an unfamiliar platform to access the feature because bill payments are being integrated into an application already used for everyday communication.

This could make the service particularly attractive to users who prefer managing routine digital transactions through a limited number of apps.

The Bharat Connect integration also means WhatsApp can immediately offer broad biller coverage instead of gradually building individual partnerships.

Gradual Rollout Across India

According to Meta, the bill-payment feature is being introduced progressively across the country.

The service is expected to become available to Android and iOS users over the coming weeks, meaning some users may receive access before others as the rollout expands.

The addition of bill payments represents another step in WhatsApp’s evolution from a messaging application into a broader digital-services platform in India.

By connecting directly with Bharat Connect, WhatsApp now allows users to manage a wide range of household and financial obligations — from electricity and water bills to FASTag, insurance and loan repayments — without leaving the app.
