PM Modi Conferred Seychelles’ Highest Civilian Honour ‘Guardian of the Blue Horizon’

Prime Minister Modi dedicated the honour to all countries working for environmental protection and the global fight against climate change. The award recognises India’s initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and the International Big Cat Alliance, which have placed sustainability and environmental responsibility at the centre of India’s international outreach.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with the Guardian of the Blue Horizon, Seychelles’ highest national honour, during his State Visit to the East African island nation. The honour was presented by Seychelles President Dr Patrick Herminie in recognition of PM Modi’s leadership in environmental conservation, sustainable development and his role in strengthening cooperation across the Indian Ocean region.

The recognition carries strong diplomatic and strategic significance. Seychelles, an important maritime partner for India in the western Indian Ocean, has acknowledged India’s growing role in promoting the Blue Economy, climate action, sustainable ocean governance and development partnerships with Small Island Developing States.

The honour also highlights India’s expanding engagement with island nations that face direct challenges from climate change, rising sea levels, marine resource pressure and maritime security concerns. By conferring the title on PM Modi, Seychelles has underlined the importance it attaches to India’s contribution in building a secure, stable and sustainable Indian Ocean region.

The award recognises India’s initiatives such as the International Solar Alliance, Mission LiFE, Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and the International Big Cat Alliance, which have placed sustainability and environmental responsibility at the centre of India’s international outreach.

The honour was presented at a time when India and Seychelles are celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations. The Prime Minister’s visit also coincides with the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Seychelles’ National Day, adding symbolic weight to the occasion.

During the visit, PM Modi and President Herminie held bilateral and delegation-level talks at the State House in Victoria. The discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in maritime security, sustainability, economic growth, capacity building, development partnership and people-to-people ties.

President Herminie said the discussions between the two sides reflected the deep friendship and mutual trust between India and Seychelles. He also referred to the Joint Vision for Sustainability, Economic Growth and Security through Enhanced Linkages as a roadmap for expanding cooperation across multiple sectors.

For India, the honour reinforces the country’s image as a trusted development partner in the Indian Ocean region. Over the years, India has supported Seychelles through capacity building, infrastructure projects, maritime cooperation, health assistance and environmental initiatives.

The Guardian of the Blue Horizon honour also reflects the growing importance of ocean diplomacy in India’s foreign policy. The Indian Ocean is central to trade, energy security, marine biodiversity, climate resilience and regional stability. India’s cooperation with Seychelles fits into a wider vision of ensuring security, sustainability and prosperity across the region.

PM Modi’s recognition in Seychelles is the latest addition to a series of international honours received for India’s leadership on sustainable development, environmental protection and global cooperation. It also strengthens the message that India’s partnership with island nations is built on respect, shared geography, climate responsibility and a common commitment to the future of the ocean.
