Indian Railways to Build World’s Largest Railway Platform at Hubli

The Indian Railways is planning to build the world’s longest railway platform at the Hubbali railway junction in Karnataka, according to a report in Deccan Herald.

The construction is likely to be completed by 2021.

Right now, the length of the platform is 550 meters, but it will now be extended to 1,505 meters.

The total cost of the entire project would amount to Rs 90 crore.

“The work was expected to be completed in June, but there was a shortage of labourers due to Covid-19 situation. Now, more than 250 labourers are working, and the project will be completed by January end,” stated SWR chief public relations officer E Vijaya.

At the end of the project, the railway station will get three new additional platform, taking the total number to 8.

“This includes the inspection carriage line used at present also getting converted to a full platform. With the new platforms, trains can be dispatched to both directions at once. Remodelling of Hubli yard is also in progress.” Indian Express quoted Vijaya as saying.

Moreover, an additional entry/exit gate is being constructed apart from the two that already exists.

Currently, Gorakhpur railway station in Uttar Pradesh is the longest operational platform. 1,366 meter-long, it was renovated in 2013, and also serves as the headquarters of the North-Eastern Railway (NER).
