Uzbekistan Home Minister Meets Amit Shah; Sign Agreement to Counter Terror

During the meeting, the two sides discussed issues of mutual interest including bilateral counter-terrorism cooperation, capacity building and training for Uzbek security personnel in Indian institutions, border guarding and disaster management. Emphasizing on India-Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership, the Ministers welcomed increased cooperation between India and Uzbekistan in the area of security cooperation.

NEW DELHI: India and Uzbekistan after Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s successful visit to Tashkent on Wednesday held wide ranging talks to strengthen security and counter-terror partnership.

Uzbekistan’s Internal Affairs Minister Pulat Bobojonov on Wednesday felicitated Home Minister Amit Shah here by presenting him traditional dress of the Central Asian nation. The facilitation took place after a Home Minister level meeting between India and Uzbekistan to discuss security partnership.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed issues of mutual interest including bilateral counter-terrorism cooperation, capacity building and training for Uzbek security personnel in Indian institutions, border guarding and disaster management. Emphasizing on India-Uzbekistan Strategic Partnership, the Ministers welcomed increased cooperation between India and Uzbekistan in the area of security cooperation.

An Agreement on Security Cooperation between the Ministry of Home Affairs of India and the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Uzbekistan was also signed by the two Ministers. The Agreement will further strengthen cooperation between India-Uzbekistan in the diverse fields including counter-terrorism, organized crime and human trafficking.

India has signed three important agreements with Uzbekistan to enhance cooperation in military ties. The memorandums of understanding (MoU) were signed after a high-level delegation meet between the two nations. The agreements were signed on the sidelines of the Council of Heads and Governments (CHGs) of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

The meeting was held between Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and the Defence Minister of Uzbekistan, Major General Bakhodir Nizamovich Kurbanov on November 2, 2019. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was attending the SCO meeting as a special envoy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan from November 1-3,2019. Rajnath Singh’s visit to Uzbekistan marks the first visit by an Indian Defence Minister in almost 15 years.
