UN General Assembly President Annalena Baerbock to Visit India for Talks on Multilateral Cooperation and AI Governance

Baerbock is scheduled to be in India on April 28, 2026, where she will hold bilateral talks with External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar. The discussions are expected to focus on cooperation within the United Nations system, global peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, technology governance and the need for stronger international coordination in a rapidly changing geopolitical environment.

The President of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock, will travel to India this week as part of efforts to strengthen multilateral cooperation on major global challenges. The visit comes at a time when India’s role in global governance, digital regulation, climate diplomacy and development partnerships is being watched closely across multilateral platforms.

A significant part of her India programme will involve engagement with representatives from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. The UN General Assembly President is expected to learn about India’s approach to artificial intelligence regulation and governance, a field where India has increasingly positioned itself as a voice for responsible, inclusive and development-oriented digital transformation.

The visit also includes a meeting with the UN Country Team in India, led by Resident Coordinator Stefan Priesner. This interaction is likely to review the UN’s work in India across development priorities, including the Sustainable Development Goals, climate resilience, health, education, gender equality, digital inclusion and sustainable growth.

Baerbock’s day-long programme will also include a press conference at UN House and a visit to a UNESCO World Heritage Site before she continues her onward journey to China. Her India visit therefore forms part of a broader diplomatic outreach aimed at engaging major Asian powers on the future of multilateral cooperation.

Annalena Baerbock, a former German foreign minister, was elected President of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on June 2, 2025. Before taking up the UN role, she served as Germany’s Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs from December 2021 to May 2025 and was a member of the German Bundestag from 2013 to June 2025.

Her political career has been closely associated with multilateralism, human rights, climate policy and foreign affairs. She also served as co-chairperson of Germany’s Green Party from 2018 to 2022 and earlier worked on foreign and security policy matters within the German parliamentary system.

The visit underlines India’s growing relevance in global multilateral debates. From climate negotiations and digital public infrastructure to peacekeeping, development cooperation and reform of international institutions, India has become a key country in conversations about how the global system should respond to 21st-century challenges. Baerbock’s engagement in New Delhi is therefore not merely a ceremonial stop, but part of a wider attempt to deepen dialogue with India on the future direction of global governance.
