Hyderabad-based aerospace and defence company Sigma Advanced Systems Limited (SASL) has signed an exclusive Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Munitions India Limited (MIL), a defence public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, to advance indigenous manufacturing capabilities in precision-guided artillery ammunition.
Announced on October 14, 2026, the collaboration focuses on the integration, indigenous manufacturing and supply of 155mm artillery course-correction fuzes (CCF), along with associated components, subsystems and technologies. The initiative seeks to strengthen India’s domestic capabilities in advanced artillery systems while supporting the evolving operational requirements of the Indian Armed Forces.
Sigma Advanced Systems announced the development through a regulatory disclosure submitted to the stock exchanges under Regulation 30 of the SEBI Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements Regulations, 2015.
Indigenous Manufacturing of Advanced Artillery Guidance Systems
The agreement brings together Sigma Advanced Systems’ engineering expertise, technology development capabilities and programme execution experience with Munitions India Limited’s established ammunition manufacturing infrastructure.
Under the collaboration, the companies will work towards establishing domestic capabilities for manufacturing and integrating advanced course-correction technologies used in 155mm artillery ammunition. The initiative also covers technology transfer, qualification, localisation and the development of associated components and subsystems.
Sigma Advanced Systems will contribute its expertise in precision engineering, defence electronics and advanced systems integration. Munitions India Limited will support the programme through its existing industrial infrastructure and experience in manufacturing ammunition and related defence products.
The partnership aims to establish a stronger domestic industrial and engineering framework for next-generation artillery technologies. It will also support the progressive development of indigenous technical expertise, manufacturing capabilities and specialised supply chains.
What Are 155mm Course-Correction Fuzes?
Course-correction fuzes are advanced guidance devices designed to improve the accuracy of artillery ammunition by enabling projectiles to make adjustments to their flight trajectory.
Conventional artillery projectiles follow a ballistic trajectory determined by factors such as firing conditions, elevation, atmospheric influences and projectile characteristics. Variations in these conditions can affect the accuracy of a shell as it travels towards its intended target.
Course-correction technology addresses this challenge by introducing guidance and control capabilities that allow compatible artillery projectiles to adjust their trajectory during flight. Such adjustments can reduce dispersion and improve the probability of reaching the intended target.
Unlike conventional artillery fuzes, which primarily perform functions related to the initiation of a projectile’s explosive charge, course-correction systems incorporate additional capabilities for trajectory management. Their use represents an important development in the evolution of modern artillery ammunition.
Improved accuracy also contributes to more efficient ammunition utilisation and enables artillery forces to engage designated targets with greater precision.
Sigma to Leverage Established Course-Correction Guidance Technology
According to the company’s announcement, the programme will draw upon Sigma Advanced Systems’ Course Correction Guidance Kit, which it describes as a mature technology already used by international customers.
The collaboration will focus on bringing this established technological capability into an Indian manufacturing and integration framework. By combining proven guidance technology with domestic engineering and industrial capabilities, the companies intend to develop a sustainable manufacturing ecosystem for advanced artillery ammunition.
The programme will involve the localisation of specialised components and subsystems associated with course-correction technologies. It will also strengthen domestic expertise in integrating guidance solutions with artillery ammunition.
For Sigma Advanced Systems, the initiative represents an expansion of its activities beyond precision engineering and subsystem manufacturing into the development and integration of advanced defence systems.
The partnership builds upon the company’s existing capabilities across aerospace, avionics, defence electronics and other mission-critical engineering applications.
Munitions India to Support Domestic Ammunition Manufacturing
Munitions India Limited, headquartered in Pune, is a major defence public sector enterprise operating under the Ministry of Defence. The company manufactures ammunition, explosives and associated defence products for the Indian Armed Forces and international customers.
Its manufacturing infrastructure and experience in ammunition production provide an important industrial foundation for the proposed collaboration.
The integration of course-correction technologies into artillery ammunition requires close coordination between guidance system developers, precision engineering specialists and ammunition manufacturers. The partnership between Sigma and Munitions India seeks to bring these capabilities together within India’s defence industrial ecosystem.
By combining specialised guidance technology with established ammunition manufacturing facilities, the initiative aims to strengthen India’s ability to manufacture increasingly sophisticated artillery ammunition domestically.
The collaboration also supports the development of an Indian supply chain for advanced ammunition technologies and associated precision-engineered components.
Supporting India’s Precision-Guided Artillery Capabilities
The Indian Armed Forces continue to modernise their artillery capabilities through improvements in range, accuracy, mobility and battlefield effectiveness. Advanced ammunition technologies form an important part of this wider modernisation process.
The development of indigenous course-correction systems can contribute to these efforts by enhancing the precision of compatible artillery ammunition.
The 155mm calibre occupies an important position in India’s artillery modernisation programmes, including the induction and development of modern artillery systems. Strengthening domestic capabilities in advanced 155mm ammunition technologies therefore complements the country’s broader investments in artillery manufacturing.
The Sigma–Munitions India collaboration seeks to support ongoing critical programmes of the Indian military through technology development, integration and localisation.
It also reflects the increasing participation of Indian private defence manufacturers in specialised technologies traditionally associated with major international defence companies.
Sigma Advanced Systems Strengthens Its Defence Manufacturing Portfolio
Sigma Advanced Systems Limited is an Indian aerospace and defence precision engineering company engaged in designing, developing and manufacturing mission-critical systems.
Its activities span aerospace, avionics, naval systems, radars, communications and advanced defence engineering.
Through its UK subsidiaries, Nasmyth and Bromford, Sigma also participates in international aerospace manufacturing and supply chains. These operations complement its Indian engineering capabilities and provide exposure to global aerospace manufacturing requirements.
The company’s expansion into course-correction technologies represents another step towards developing higher-value defence products and integrated systems.
Earlier, in June 2026, Sigma Advanced Systems announced an export contract worth approximately ₹208 crore for manufacturing and supplying 40,000 units of 155mm M107 artillery shell bodies to a North American customer.
That programme marked an expansion of Sigma’s presence in artillery ammunition components. The new collaboration with Munitions India adds advanced course-correction technology to the company’s expanding defence manufacturing activities.
Partnership Aligned with Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat
The agreement supports the Government of India’s Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, which encourage the domestic development and manufacturing of critical defence technologies.
Precision-guided ammunition requires specialised expertise in guidance electronics, precision manufacturing, systems integration and qualification. Developing these capabilities within India can strengthen domestic defence production and reduce dependence on imported technologies.
The collaboration between Sigma Advanced Systems and Munitions India is intended to create opportunities for technology absorption, manufacturing localisation and the development of indigenous expertise in advanced artillery systems.
It also demonstrates the potential for cooperation between Indian defence public sector enterprises and private manufacturers in developing technologically sophisticated military equipment.
By integrating established technological solutions with Indian manufacturing infrastructure, the partnership aims to build a stronger foundation for domestic production of next-generation artillery ammunition.
The agreement marks a significant step in expanding India’s defence manufacturing capabilities into advanced course-correction technologies. As Sigma Advanced Systems and Munitions India pursue the programme, their collaboration will contribute to the development of a more capable and self-reliant Indian defence industrial ecosystem.
