NCL Meets 140 Million Tonne Coal Production Target Ahead of Schedule in FY26

With 10 highly mechanised opencast mines, NCL has built a strong record of operational consistency and has now maintained its streak of meeting annual coal production targets for a decade. The latest achievement further reinforces the company’s position as one of the most significant contributors to domestic coal output at a time when India continues to rely heavily on thermal power for meeting its electricity demand.

Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), the Singrauli-based flagship subsidiary of Coal India Limited, has achieved its annual coal production target of 140 million tonnes ahead of schedule for the financial year 2025–26. The company reached the milestone on March 30, 2026, after the first shift, underlining its continued importance in supporting India’s energy requirements.

NCL, a key arm of Coal India Limited, plays an important role in sustaining the country’s energy security. In the present energy landscape, domestically produced coal remains a critical support for India’s power sector, especially in ensuring stable fuel availability for thermal power plants. In that context, NCL’s steady and rising production has helped maintain uninterrupted coal supplies, strengthening the reliability of power generation across multiple regions.

The company’s management credited the achievement to the dedication and resilience of its workforce, praising the NCL team for its commitment and sustained efforts throughout the year. It also acknowledged the support of stakeholders whose cooperation helped the company reach the production milestone ahead of time.

The accomplishment is significant not only as a production benchmark but also as an indicator of NCL’s role in the wider national energy chain. As India continues to balance growth in conventional energy with its long-term transition goals, high-performing coal producers such as NCL remain central to keeping the grid supplied and the power sector stable.
