The Government of Manipur has announced plans to develop a bird sanctuary at Kharungpat in Kakching district, aiming to strengthen biodiversity conservation while also promoting eco-tourism in the region.
The proposed sanctuary will span around 227 hectares, covering nearly 6.7% of the wetland area. The site is ecologically important and serves as a habitat for a wide range of waterbirds, including both resident and migratory species.
According to forest officials, the 2023 bird census recorded about 69 species in the region, with nearly 40% being migratory birds. However, the 2025 census has indicated a decline in migratory bird populations, raising environmental concerns and prompting conservation action from the state government.
The Cabinet’s decision to declare Kharungpat a bird sanctuary under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, is seen as a significant step toward protecting fragile wetland ecosystems and restoring bird populations in the area.
