Ladakh has exported its first commercial consignment of fresh apricots to the United Arab Emirates, opening a new international market for the Union Territory’s horticulture sector.
The inaugural shipment of five metric tonnes was sent under an agreement signed between the Ladakh Administration and UAE-based retail company Lulu Group in April 2026.
The initiative is expected to increase the international visibility of Ladakh’s premium Raktsey apricots and help local farmers secure better prices by connecting them directly with overseas markets.
Export Target of More Than 1,000 Tonnes
More than 1,000 metric tonnes of fresh apricots are expected to be exported during the current season under the programme.
The target represents a major increase compared with the combined export of around 1,500 kilograms during the previous two years.
Exporters will manage harvesting, sorting, grading, packaging, transportation and marketing. This arrangement will allow farmers to concentrate on cultivation while professional agencies handle the complex export process.
The initiative is also expected to improve quality control and ensure that the fruit reaches international markets in suitable condition.
Faster Transport from Orchards to Delhi
Fresh apricots have a short shelf life and require rapid transportation after harvesting.
The Ladakh Administration has established a dedicated control room to coordinate logistics and resolve transportation-related issues. Efforts are also underway to create a green corridor that can reduce the time required to move apricots from Ladakh’s orchards to Delhi.
From Delhi, the fruit can be transported by air to overseas markets, including the UAE.
Improved logistics will be essential for maintaining freshness, reducing wastage and ensuring that exporters meet international quality standards.
Global Market for Ladakh’s Raktsey Apricots
Ladakh is known for its Raktsey apricot, a distinctive variety valued for its colour, sweetness, aroma and nutritional quality.
The fruit is grown in the region’s high-altitude environment, where dry weather, intense sunlight and cool temperatures contribute to its characteristic flavour.
Greater access to global markets could create new income opportunities for farmers and encourage the expansion of organised horticulture across the Union Territory.
The partnership with Lulu Group could also provide Ladakhi apricots with visibility through an established retail network in the Gulf region.
Plans for Apricot Processing Unit
The Ladakh Administration is working towards establishing a modern apricot-processing facility in the region.
The proposed unit could produce dried apricots, juices, jams, preserves, pulps and other value-added products. Processing would help extend the commercial life of the fruit and reduce losses caused by its short harvesting season.
Value-added products can also command higher prices and allow growers to earn income beyond the fresh-fruit export period.
A local processing facility would reduce the need to transport all produce in fresh form and could create employment in grading, packaging, processing and marketing.
Strengthening Farmers’ Incomes
The export programme is expected to strengthen Ladakh’s horticulture value chain by linking farmers, exporters, logistics companies, processors and international retailers.
Better market access can encourage farmers to improve orchard management, adopt modern grading practices and increase production of export-quality fruit.
The first shipment to the UAE represents an important step towards establishing Ladakh as a recognised source of premium apricots in international markets.
Successful execution of the larger export programme could provide farmers with higher returns, reduce post-harvest losses and support the long-term development of the region’s horticulture economy.
